Lawyers for Prop. 8 file high court appeal to ban YouTube video of trial
Source: LA Times

Reporting from Washington - The lawyers defending California's Proposition 8 and its ban on same-sex marriage urged the U.S. Supreme Court today to block video coverage of next week's trial in San Francisco.

They filed an emergency appeal with Justice Anthony M. Kennedy and argued that their client's right to a fair trial would be jeopardized if each day's proceedings were put on YouTube.

The trial "has the potential to become a media circus," wrote attorney Charles Cooper. "The record is already replete with evidence showing that any publicizing of support for Prop. 8 has inevitably led to harassment, economic reprisal, threats, and even physical violence. In this atmosphere, witnesses are understandably quite distressed at the prospect of their testimony being broadcast worldwide on YouTube."

FOR THE RECORD: An earlier version of this article said opponents of Proposition 8 sent petitions signed by more than 50,000 people urging TV coverage of the trial. More than 140,000 names were sent on Friday

I guess they don't want people to know who they are because people might get angry at them. They should shut the hell up about other people if they want the same courtesy.

1. Damn right I'm not knowingly giving my money to bigots
And anything that helps me know who my enemies are, all the better. Too bad y'all think that's "harassment" and "economic reprisal."

2. I'm going to go out on a limb and say that Kennedy
turn down the appeal. I think I read somewhere he leans toward allowing cameras in the court room. That should help kill the appeal.

4. OK lets see some actual evidence
Don't remember hearing about any at the time. If it had actually happened they would have been shouting it from the rooftops.

6. well I remember one story about how the gays made a Mormon lady cry
she owned a once-successful restaurant that was a gay hangout & couldnt understand why her patrons decided to get their margaritas elsewhere after her name popped up in the pro-8 donors list.

LATimes said she cried.

7. They are such pathetic hypocritical cowards.
Other people's marriages are a legitimate subject for public controversy, but their attempt to prohibit other people's marriages isn't. Fuck them.

11. I thought it was illegal to have cameras in the courtroom in California now. It's undestandable.
I mean having this information helps don't get me wrong. But I can also see where NOT having cameras in the courtroom is necessary.

12. You must have missed the OJ trial
in '94 and '95. It was almost all shown in TV, including that horrible mistake of a verdict.

13. Oh I remember the OJ trial.
Shit I live in LA and it was on TV practically 24/7 here, but I think that California banned cameras in the courtroom after the trial because of the shitstorm media circus that trial created.
