Subject: Tsunami Information Statement issued 01/9/2010 at 4:32PM PST

At 4:28 PM Pacific Standard Time on January 9, an earthquake with preliminary magnitude 6.4 occurred 15 miles/24 Km southwest of Eureka, California.

The magnitude is such that a tsunami IS NOT EXPECTED. However, in coastal areas of intense shaking, locally generated tsunamis can be triggered by underwater landslides. This will be the only WCATWC message issued for this event.

The location and magnitude are based on preliminary information. Further information will be issued by the United States Geological Survey or the appropriate regional seismic network.

11. My daughter just called from Sacramento and didn't know anything about the quake until I told her

I was checking it out on IRIS Sesimic map and the date is given as Jan 10th - which is Sunday - tomorrow. These IRIS people msut be in the South Pacific area or Australia.

anchovies or whatever they eat, and that traversing the eventual earthquake area on their way to Oregon wouldn't make sense.

It's an interesting coincidence, but the food thing sounds more likely.

22. This area is known as the Mendocino Triple Junction.

Three tectonic plates interact here: North American, Pacific and Gorda. The San Andreas and Mendocino faults and Cascadia Subduction Zone come together resulting in numerous and sometimes strong temblors. It is very geologically active.

you should attempt to study the archeology in this region. It is quite bizarre for there really isn't any.

The reason for this has been attributed to the idea that a tsunami once swept through this region taking everything with it.

39. Yes I was camping with my kids at the beach in San Diego and

remember getting a call to go in land because of that quake but there was never a tsunami.

I first heard about it on DU because a poster here was with a FEMA employee whose pager went off.

In San Francisco, we got the word about an hour later -- 15 minutes or so before the wave would have hit. Someone forgot to mind a fax machine at City Hall.

27. Love the Eureka area! Parents used to live there until about

ten years ago. I lived in the King Salmon area for a few months in '79, and was amazed at how often we got little shakes; and on the newspaper weather page was a weekly tracking report of seismic activity.

But I did well finding gold and white chanterelle mushrooms, one Matsutake and what I hope are candy caps, (will 'smell' them when they dry to see)

Also spent a lot of time doing "tick check" and removing several.

Knew it was an earthquake right away but was not worried. I was in the Loma Prieta earthquake of '89 fairly close to the epicenter and this quake today was nothing close to that.
