CNN Poll: Majority confident Obama can handle terrorism
Posted: January 11th, 2010 12:07 PM ET

Washington (CNN) – In the wake of the Christmas day attempt to blow up a U.S. airliner, most Americans remain confident that the Obama administration can protect the country from terrorism, according to a new national poll.
..................

Nearly two-thirds of people questioned in the poll say they have a moderate or great deal of confidence in the administration to protect the public from future terrorist attacks, up 2 points from August. Thirty-five percent say they have not much or no confidence at all, down 1 point from August.

A number of Republicans have criticized the president over his handling of the attempted bombing of Northwest flight 253 from Amsterdam to Detroit. But according to the survey, 57 percent approve of the way President Barack Obama's responded, with 39 percent disapproving of how he handled the situation.

"Only a third of Republicans have a positive view of Obama on this matter, but the key for the administration is the 55 percent of independents who approve of how the president responded to the incident on Christmas Day," says CNN Polling Director Keating Holland.

36. Link.
http://dictionary.reference.com/browse/synecdoche

Sort of like making the US safe for liberty, or defending civil liberties, or fighting poverty or trying to defeat racism.

Or making the US safe for people to live in liberty, defend people against those who would limit their enjoyment of civil liberties, making the lives of those living in poverty better, or trying to keep racist attitudes from negatively affecting people and trying to get people to stop having racist attitudes.

But synecdoche as a rhetorical figure is so much cleaner, neater, and easily understood. Well, given half a will and wit.

10. I am highly confident Obama will do a better job than Bushco--and Cheney should shut up and sit down
But, I wish that Obama had ordered a review of the Bushco "homeland" security policies as soon as he took office. Anyone coulda guessed they would not be great. I'm glad no one got hurt, though. I'm glad Obama called a failure a failure; a and I'm glad they're looking at the policies now.

28. Let's distinguish between "accountability" and "fault"
One of the myths that the left has created that is now a problem for Obama is the patently false notion that a President is at fault if the country is attacked.

This myth confuses the notion of "accountability" -- taking responsibility for correcting whatever weakness might have been exploited to mount an attack -- and being at fault for the attack.

30. semantics
Both those who are accountable and those who are at fault blew it in my opinion.

I travel extensively and am appalled at the real lack of security, both that I have seen personally and read about. Newark is just the tip of ht eiceberg. I worked for a gut once who tols me the "fish always stinks from the head" meaning if you are in charge, you're on the hook. Not saying he was the one to check the manifests in the airports, but by not firing the leadership, he is in fact saying he is ok with their efforts.

Many folks should have been fired, ESPECIALLY since they were not hired for their security skills in the first place, like Janet N.

33. I think you confirm my point
You don't actually find Obama to be at fault for the incident, but you think he failed to take the steps needed to prevent a recurrence (which for you involves firing a lot of people.)

I don't agree with you, but our disagreement is over his demonstrated accountability for putting things right, not because we see the incident itself as being his fault.

34. to be clear
It is NOT Obama's job to check the watch list, etc - those are the folks who failed. I expect him to have the best possible folks in those roles, and the courage to pitch them uickly when a systemic failure is observed (or it is another "nice job Brownie...")

so I guess we agree there.

27. Thanks - have one
So, the watch list, the father ratting him out, the officials taking or staying on vacation - this is all someone else's fault ? This is a problem at another airport ? Right.

No to mention the TSA agent at Newark, the cameras not recording - uh, where is that airport ?

Edited on Mon Jan-11-10 11:44 PM by No Passaran
The airport was a foreign one and it's not Airport security's fault. It's intelligence agency's fault if you want to blame someon.

31. I blame the security mechanism
whether it is the airport security, intelligence, whatever - Obama has control of the mechanism for security, and is therefore accountable for the failures.

32. To confirm
Airport security in the US is a joke - I have read the incidents, and seen them myself. And these are the issues we are told about.

Airport security is in place for two reasons only 1) make work jobs and 2) make people fell like they are safe.

16. That's still a scary %
The onslaught of personal and political attacks from all the dirty corners of the Reich Wing from even before Obama swore the oath of office is still mind boggling. Some catered to the whacky fringes, some catered to the fearful, some catered to the fundies, some of it catered to middle America. But its been a resounding success for that 'minority'!

This is not a good news story. Can you imagine the numbers if we had a truely independent media, not owned by interests that benefit from attacking progressive change policies. Who didn't bring on Blue Dogs and GOP industry shills to speak for their parties. Not only that they even stoop to giving air time to nutbars like Ollie and the TeaBagger brigade.(Where's Michael Moore or Noam Chomsky?)

As well if the "fairness doctrine" was never overturned and we had at least a counter "Air America" radio station in every right wing blow hard station's area.

There was zero information from the MSM about what "single payer" is. Many are still at a loss to define it, perhaps even some here on DU. How it is the most cost effective (for conservatives) and the most comprehensive (for liberals) never even gets a discussion on the 'public airways"? That's why all of the rest of the democracies, and even some that aren't, are using it. It was maddening watching the MSM, instead of bringing on a rep from Doctors for Single Payer, bring in instead Doctor Gupta or some other bought out industry swag to "explain" the options out there.

I don't blame a lot of middle America for being afraid of Government Run (insert here). There was no explanation of their choices, so it is natural to fear the unknown.

But I also blame the DLC and Obama for not at least TRYING to counter that spin machine by having more public speeches explaining it. Sure the MSM would edit and pick it apart and show clips out of context, but at least SOME of the rational explanation would get out there.

Count me in as another who is just exhausted and exasperated by this administration. Such a long way (to the right) from that blissful few moments in November of '08. After going through eight years of insufferable angst, I thought by now I would be at peace and the job of progressives would be mostly cheering from the sidelines, with the Repukes wringing their hands and screaming "SOCIALIST". Well at least I got the last part right.

22. ALL massive Psyop Campaign .
My opinion is ...

Goal of media in collusion w/ Pentagon is to keep the manufactured " war on terror " in the minds of the people , to maintain the manufactured support in their " war on terror " (even though many groups labeled 'terrorist " have direct links to U.S. / Uk / Israeli INTEL .

The constant drum beat of polls by accused CIA controlled CNN is an example , since when are polls a news story , and the only reason to show polls is to MANIPULATE the public's opinion , i.e. psyops .

Also it's to push OBAMA and to make sure he doesn't deviate from Game Plan , " WAR on TERROR " and it's really absurd because the FBI , the CIA are already in place doing their thang on the " war on Terror " so why does OBAMA have to make some kind of speech about terrorism , to appease right wing and in context of what He's REALLY doing , .. increasing DRONE attacks in Pakistan ... increasing war machine in Afghanistan ... increasing BlackWater & Marines in Pakistan , increasing the militarization of AFRICA and most people are not told Special Ops are ALL OVER AFRICA ,.. in Uganda , in Somalia , in Yemen , in Ethiopia , and another dozen other hole in the wall countries , in addition to SIX new bases in Columbia and Replacing troops leaving in Iraq w/ Mercenaries shows Homie . . . is a game playa . So this misinfo OBAMA isnt doing enough is all psyops , he's continuing the Pentagons plan of their RESOURCE WAR in Africa( COBALT for cell phones and some mineral is used for U.S. high tech weapons oh, OIL too , Nigeria is NEXT target WATCH ) , continued occupation of middle east and it also gives the illusion that , you know he aint doing that same old terrorism war thang like Bush , he's thoughtful , he's careful , hes different , to maintain his BASE which already is in free fall .

Remember lol , ABE VREIS Dutch journalist was the one who uncovered CNN brought in Psychological Operations to work as " INTERNS " during the 90s admitted by Pentagon Officer to reporter . CNN is as complicit as you can get , don't believe a word they say . There's also the story of Serbian General was set to do interview w/ Larry King and CNN pulled plug at last minute , pulling out camera crew and shortly after at location of "interview " a surface to surface missile hit killing General . Go figure , coincident ? lol , ya right .

25. Of course Obama can, Republicans continue making terror far worse than reality to promote fear
Edited on Mon Jan-11-10 05:50 PM by LaPera
and worry.

What else do the corporate republican fascist have to run on?

Not to mention the hundreds of corporations who make outrageous profits from our tax dollars to keep wars going through fear, increasing their huge profits as part of the "military industrial complex".

Republican have always and will continue to use fear & lies to get elected...Republican Bush used fear daily for eight years.

Look how the republican liars used committees & other tactics to promote fear-mongering of the USSR "threat" for power and profit for over fifty years.

Now they have a new boogieman...Republicans want attacks, they encourage attacks indirectly, but subtle...some attack somewhere is a small price to pay to keep people in line, in fear for their unbelievable profits from OUR tax dollars....

But no money for the people who need health care....also the republican reasoning and tactic of draining the economy with wars - with fear....Republicans are doing all of this through a simple process - promoting FEAR!
