GM may reopen some factories to meet higher demand
Source: AP

By TOM KRISHER

DETROIT (AP) - General Motors Co. may reopen some shuttered factories because it can't produce certain vehicles fast enough, its North American president said Monday.

Mark Reuss told reporters at the North American International Auto Show in Detroit that plants building the Chevrolet Equinox, GMC Terrain and Cadillac SRX crossover vehicles and the Buick LaCrosse sedan are at capacity and can't satisfy demand.

Reuss mentioned an idled factory in Spring Hill, Tenn., but stopped short of saying any plants would be reopened.

He said if he does his job right and restores faith in the GM brands, the company could hire workers again. In the short term, he said the company will try to raise output at existing plants.

2. Great news, but I did not expect these to be the vehicles...

Looks like SUV's are heavily in demand.

Like the Equinox, but the Terrain?!?! http://www.latimes.com/business/la-fi-neil8-2010jan08,0,3697404.column

3. GM has heavily marketed the Equinox
But the Terrain puzzles me too.:wtf:

I've heard excellent reviews of LaCrosse from some friends who test drove it and mixed reviews on the SRX.

9. I would love to get the LaCrosse
but it's a little outside my price range. It's a little bigger than I need too. The new, smaller Regal looks great too.

4. Dan Neil's a dick
Like most automobile critics, he cannot figure out what a customer needs to know. What's the mpg? How much room?

He never seems to have anything positive to say about any GM product.

7. The Terrain is the GMC version of the Equiniox
So it makes sense that both are popular. They are fuel efficient SUVs. They both get 26 (22/32) which is better than many cars, such as the Honda Accord which gets 25 (21/31).

11. Thanks for clearing that up...
I should have known that. Odd that I've heard great things about the Equinox though and bad thing about the Terrain. Stranger things have happened though.

8. We have been waiting for an Equinox for a while
We live in the country with snow for much of the year, so would like an AWD. My little Nissan is great with fuel, but can not be driven in the snow at all. The Equinox doe not have bad gas millage, about 26-28 and will give us what we need. it has a great warranty and is a great crossover. I am very excited for this car!

12. Snow tires are a bargain
Modern snow tires can grip on ice. Here are several models:
Bridgestone Blizzak WS60
Continental Extreme Winter Contact
Michelin X-ice

I bought the Continental tires and an extra set of rims this year. Work great

13. We put snow tires on the thing
It did not help a lot. the wheel base is small and it sits too low to the ground as well. With the weather here lately, we need the bigger wheel base and the AWD.

instead of the PTB, he would suggest that the NUMMI plant would be a great place to reopen.

16. GM may build some cars that people are not embarrassed to drive...
Oh wait a minute. That's not the headline. That was just my foolish sense of optimism talking.

HEY GM! IF YOU WANT TO "re-open" SOME PLANTS, HOW ABOUT RE-OPENING THE PLANT THAT USED TO BUILD THE EV1, YOU BASTARDS!

I don't understand the love affair with that particular vehicle.
