Stupak weighing bid for governor
Deb Price / The Detroit News

Washington -- Rep. Bart Stupak, D-Menominee, said today he's "struggling" over whether to run for governor, and is headed to Detroit for two days of meetings with party leaders and constituent groups to help him decide.

"If I get in, I get in to win," Stupak said in an interview.

"I'll hear out party leaders. The decision is not imminent. It'll be awhile. I'm a practical guy," he added.

But he said Lt. Gov. John Cherry's decision to drop out of the 2010 gubernatorial race prompted "folks" to reach out and urge him to consider.

1. In a local paper here in Stupak's district, in Dem county, majority on internet poll "no" on Stupak
For what it's worth. Of course it is a nonscientific poll.

2. Well, nonscientific polls are quite popular here on DU.
I'm always reading about "DU this poll" or "DU that poll". So they must actually be very important.

6. They have some, albeit much diminished, importance
if they had zero importance, I suspect media outlets wouldn't use them. As it is both sides try to hit these nonscientific polls.

17. Years ago I used to work for a large media organization in their web development department.
We would put up the polls that the editors asked us to with no protections as to whom would be able to take the poll or how many times one could vote from one address. They are simply for entertainment value and perhaps a bit of propaganda value.

3. Does this mean
that he may have gone too far and burned his bridges (and maybe a deal to leave is in the works)?

5. Downstaters don't know him. Case of an inflated ego.
He's also part of that Ensign/Coburn C Street (or whatever) religious cabal.

8. Correct.

And many in the north want nothing to do with him anymore. Even though GT County has been been out of his district since the last redistricting, he's been making regular enough trips here for fundraising. Today a union guy was in where I work and I mentioned Stupak to him. He said things like "Stupak hates women" "He got the public option dropped" and such things. I know the Dem base here and they are staunch pro-choice. They can turn a blind eye only so long and i believe the clock has run out for Bart here. I know I would work hard against him in a primary.

Still, the big money's downstate and there are some good power bases already committed and it ain't to him.

14. He was a State Trooper...
That should explain his 'inflated ego' pretty well.

9. WHO?? Hell, No!
This would just all but hand the Republicans the seat in January 2011. It is already bad enough for Democrats running for Governor in this state to pull it out after the Bush years.

SUPPORT ALMA WHEELER SMITH for Democratic Governor in 2010 and my State Representative. If you do not know who she is....here is a link here...http://054.housedems.com/ and here..http://www.almaformichigan.com/ and here...http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alma_Wheeler_Smith

10. I think Wheeler Smith....
is the least likely to win the nomination. I liked her proposal for tax reform, particularly the part about publicly funding college education. I have, however, been turned off by her negative comments regarding Gov. Granholm. I don't see her getting the nomination...although I wouldn't be surprised if she was picked as lieutenant governor.

As far as Stupak is concerned...NO! Dillon, Ilitch, Stupak....enough with the conservative candidates.

11. Jenny Has Not Been a Good Governor......IMHO
Edited on Thu Jan-14-10 10:52 PM by kayla9170
The problems are what they are but Jenny did little to prepare and stop SOME of them. She deserved to be criticized. And many in Michigan will support Alma being critical of Jenny because, they are also.

12. She's been a great governor
Edited on Thu Jan-14-10 11:11 PM by blue_onyx
Most of our jobs losses and economic problems have been a result of the auto industry. She had no control over the collapse of the auto industry. Her focus on green energy will pay off for MI for many years to come. I'm also a big fan of the film incentives which have brought a new industry to our state. Michigan would be in much worse shape had Granholm not been our governor.

"And many in Michigan will support Alma being critical of Jenny because, they are also."

Well, it cost her one vote in the primary (mine) and possibly many others who do support Gov. Granholm. Wheeler Smith was one of my favorite candidates and now I'm not even considering her.

It seem you have joined the GOP in calling her Jenny....nice :eyes:
