Haiti, then today along the coast of Venezuela, now Oklahoma...is it normal for quakes to occur in several different areas in a relatively short period of time? Yikes.

10. Actually, it isn't that uncommon. Earthquakes actually happen every day.
It's just because of Haiti's disastrous one that the media picks up these stories whereas normally, they don't even make the back page.

Quakes here don't even make the local news unless they're at least a 5.0.

24. I wonder if there's any gas drilling in the vicinity of the epicenter
We've had several earthquakes in north central Texas in the past year (all of them very mild), but this is a pretty geologically stable area from what I understand. Central Oklahoma isn't much of a departure from my area, at least no to my eyes.

We've seen a tremendous amount of gas drilling in the areas where the earthquakes occurred. I don't recall if any hard and fast link was made between hydraulic fracturing (part of the drilling process in the Barnett Shale) and earthquakes, but to an apathetic cynic like me, no gas wells equal no earthquakes; gas wells equal earthquakes. I'd be very interested to see if there's any connection at all.

33. New Madrid Seismic Zone.
Look it up. Have some toilet paper handy. Last time it let loose, within a month it hit the same place with 3 8.0+ events. With all the unreinforced brick masonry in that area of the country, if it cuts loose now the death toll will be enormous. That area has a history of triple-quakes too.

Last time, the Mississippi River ran backwards for a while due to uplift. Shook the White House and rang church bells in Chicago.

Many believe that fault system is overdue...

38. I seem to recall
the 5.5 quake of 04-09-52 that centered on El Reno (per USGS) and felt over a wide area
We lived in Braman, due north of OKC and just short of the KS line
However, being only 3 1/2 at the time I don't really know if it's my rememberer that is in play or just remembering hearing about it
I have this vague sense of being outside in the babysitter's yard and falling down when the ground started shaking
It did some damage like toppled chimneys and cracked walls

In central Texas,we have seen a large increase in earthquakes in the Barnett Shale area...including DFW...where a large amount of natural gas drilling occurs
