Canada to give immigration priority to Haiti earthquake survivors
Source: The Globe & Mail

Canada is giving immigration priority to Haitians “significantly and adversely” affected by the earthquake that shattered the country.

Immigration Minister Jason Kenney said today it will be easier for Canadians to sponsor Haitians for immigration, including family members, “protected persons” and children being adopted by Canadians.

“Immigration Canada will respond on a priority basis to those directly affected by the disaster; we will prioritize processing of new sponsorship applications made by Canadian citizens,” he said, adding that applicants “must identify themselves as being directly and significantly affected by the earthquake” and “must of course meet the standard admisssibility requirements of Canadian law.”

As Canada resumes processing immigration applications suspended in the aftermath of the earthquake and opens a satellite immigration office in neighbouring Dominican Republic, the country is also cutting Haitians living in Canada some slack. Temporary residents - including workers and students - can apply to have their stay extended with the fees waived.

I'm pleased to see the Government reacting quickly. Canada already has a sizeable Haitian community, most of whom live in Montreal. We're in a unique position to bring in a large number of displaced people quickly.

1. While I absolutely applaud their decision.

Quebec separatists are not going to like this decision. Most Haitians will immigrate to French-speaking Quebec and their allegiance will be to Canada and not Quebec. I remember Jacques Parizeau's ethnic vote remark after they lost the 1995 separation referendum.

I wonder if this will re-stoke the Quebec separatist movement. Time will tell.

8. The Canadian Government
Was just as involved in the 2004 coup as the US and France.

For some reason - I also seem to remember Canada not allowing Aristide to enter Canada. . .

I just donated tonight while at BC liquor. Hopefully the government will match that depending on where it goes.

I don't know the details, but if you sent to a Canadian aid charity, it *may* get matched. I guess it all depends on how Canada is tracking the donations (if they are matching the sums accrued by the relief agencies, then they may not discriminate to the individual level). Who knows.

9. Great Site . . .
New I had this link saved somewhere. Takes us step by step through Canada's involvement. This does not mean the US or France are less guilty - just saying.

Our three countries damn well better step up to the plate and do right by these people.
