An Ice Shelf The Size Of Rhode Island Breaks Up In Less Than 24 Hours
Source: Daily Green/NASA

Within a 24-hour space, an area of sea ice larger than the state of Rhode Island broke away from the Ronne-Filchner Ice Shelf and shattered into many smaller pieces. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASA’s Aqua and Terra satellites captured this event in this series of photo-like images from January 12 and January 13, 2010.

2. The ice shelf was not very thick.
Huge icebergs don't hold together unless they are very thick.

"I urge my fellow republicon chickenhawks to ignore these inconvenient lib-rul facts, just as they are aggressively ignoring the sick, injured, hungry and dying human beings in Haiti. We republicons have more important things to do -- like advocating for more tax cuts for republicon fatcats. Smirk. Sneer."

6. Oops.
I've been predicting the worst for a long long time. Maybe it's the innate sense of thermodynamics that came with my genes. There will be a multitude of melting modes and surprises.

None of this is a surprise. But it is an indication of just how far over the edge we really have been.

Stop the wars. Stop all trivial activities. And I mean things like the Olympics. Sorry to say that. But I'm being honest.

19. I betcha
Most people don't even know how big RI is - so it's kind of funny when something is said to be the size of Rhode Island. I bet 99 out of 100 people wouldn't even know how big RI is. And CT, MA and RI residents are excepted from that 99 out of 100.

I love my state. I've lived a lot of different places and I came back to RI and except for the dead of winter, I'm never sorry about it.

21. I bet you
KNow how big RI is - I laugh when things are said to be RI sized because with the exception of MA, CT and RI residents, I bet 99 out of 100 people you ask have no idea what the size of RI actually is.

We are the size of Caribbean Islands.

Not that this figures into the Climate Change Deniers' thinking.

16. 2009 was one of the warmest years on record, in the southern hemisphere
This seems like further evidence for that finding. Global warming is real - a brief cold snap in North America and Europe doesn't mean it's not.
