At District church, Obama evokes King and calls for keeping faith

President Obama worshiped Sunday at an historic African American congregation in Northwest Washington, his second appearance at a local church since taking office one year ago. The nation's first African American president, spoke from a pulpit where the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. preached on several occasions.

On February 7, 1968, King visited the church to deliver a sermon that was part of a series titled: "In search of a sense of direction." But Obama referenced a lesser-known King address, from Dec. 6, 1956 -- when the country finally began to deal with the issue of segregation and King asked the question, "Where do we go from here ?"

"In his sermon, all of those years ago, Dr. King quoted a poet, 'Truth forever on the scaffold/ Wrong forever on the throne/ And behind the dim unknown stands God/ Within the shadows keeping watch of his own,' " Obama said. "Even as Dr. King stood in this church, a victory in the past and uncertainty in the future, he trusted God. He trusted that God would make a way, a way for prayers to be answered, a way for our union to be perfected."

Obama said people today can do their part to work toward that perfect union by getting "back to basics," and he said that, through faith, people can find the resolve to get better.

1. I really, really, really wish politicians would stay out of the god-bothering business..

Not everyone has "faith" and a fair percentage of those who do hold it as a quintessentially private thing between themselves and their god, not to be dragged out for politicians to use as a talking point.
