Five Days After Devastating Quake, Little Michelle, Almost Two Years Old, Rescued; Prognosis "Excellent"

(CBS) Amid the horror in Haiti, a miracle.

"Early Show" co-anchor Harry Smith was there after a girl named Michelle, who's almost two years old, was pulled from under the debris of a collapsed building -- five days after the massive earthquake.

And against all odds, she managed to cling to life.

Michelle endured five days of searing heat, dusty air and utter darkness.

But neighbors said they thought they heard a noise.

Capt. P.J. Parker, of Florida Task Force One, a rescue team from the Miami-Dade County area, told Smith, "We had actually met up with the French team, and they advised that they had heard cries in the area."

That unit worked side-by-side with the team from France. They couldn't hear a thing. But the dogs knew better.

"Chase and Striker alerted us on the baby's location ... and then we pulled her out," Parker says.

7. That isn't a miracle.

A miracle is something that defies the laws of nature.

People can survive in horrendous conditions. And it was human effort and luck that saved her.

god just didn't have enough miracles to go around.

and besides, god works in mysterious ways, meaning (s/h)e's flipping quarters...

it's like a few decades back when a bridge over tampa bay collapsed. someone barely escaped as their car precariously dangled over the precipice. it was a miracle!

there was no miracle, however, for the busload of children that was crushed in the water by a portion of the bridge.

i don't know which has been cheapend more, "miracle" or "hero".

18. What I hate most is when there's a tragedy and a survivor inevitably says "God saved me."

I always want to scream: "Well, that god of yours must have had it in for those other bastards who died, huh?" Such supreme arrogance.

I'm glad they rescued someone, but can we all give the word "miracle" a rest?

The girl was saved due to hard work, human endeavor and technology (science). No miracles involved at all.

15. There are so many horrible things happening in the world

that seeing the face of this particular little girl, safe in the arms of her father for the time being, warms the heart and soothes the soul.

I wonder, though, what will become of father and daughter? Do they have a place to go, food, water, shelter, is the girl's mother still alive? This feeling of helplessness in the face of so many individual tragedies... What can I say, what can I do?

20. They showed a little baby in an orphanage very dehydrated. It is so upsetting to

think of how dangerous a time it will be for all the children of Haiti. When they didn't have formula they used regular milk for the babies which gave them the runs...which then resulted in dehydration. I hope they can get to the babies soon with formula.
