Israeli rescuers free Haiti student six days after quake
Source: Ha'aretz

Israeli teams on Monday rescued a woman who has been trapped for six days under the wreckage of Port-au-Prince's university in Haiti, Channel 10 reported.

The woman was transferred to receive medical treatment at the IDF's field hospital, which was set up following the deadly earthquake that shook the country on Tuesday.

Israeli rescue teams were called on by international forces to aid in the rescue of victims trapped in the rubble of the 4-story university building in the southern part of the capital.

According to Channel 10, the international teams knew of two people trapped in the wreckage of the university building, and managed to rescue one of them. The Israeli team was asked to aid with pulling out the other - a female student at the university.

The Israeli team used special equipment to begin lifting parts of the rubble and carefully but quickly managed to create an opening, preventing the whole structure from collapsing. The team was able to see the woman through the opening and successfully rescue her.

2. Personally, what I think is so amazing...
...the will to live. The human body can only withstand so much. These people are reaching out for hand to save them. I sincerely doubt they care whose hand reaches back! Six days?! Doesn't this just make you feel a tad more hopeful?

3. Yes, it does...
And I give all the credit in the world for those who keep looking. Wow. Six days. Kind of puts things in perspective, doesn't it? And it sure gives a message of hope... Stories like this have to inspire those who are doing such difficult work... And, I have to admit, this one choked me up... :hi:

5. You and I are both dog lovers.
We both know our canine companions are also involved in this search. I remember the "fake victims" which were placed at "Ground Zero" in NY. It was done to help the psyche of the dogs. One can only imagine what feelings washed over those who rescued someone after six days. It doesn't matter...Israeli, Canadian, the US, English, Jordanian, Venezuelan, Cuban, Kenyan, Russian, Japanese, Australian, South African...or canine...the feeling has to be one of profound hope.

7. That was the exact same thing that I was thinking!
I remember reading that people hid after 9/11 to let the rescue dogs find them because they were becoming disheartened after finding so few... And I was thinking that the dogs working in Haiti wouldn't have the same frustration, since there are so many left to find... :-(

And I can't imagine the overwhelming feelings, no matter what nationality, and they all have their dogs in common, too. :-)

I was looking for this pic, and found it. This was taken of a 9/11 rescue dog and it has stuck with me since 2001... :loveya:

11. From the article:
"The Israeli team used special equipment to begin lifting parts of the rubble...

That is key here, this is excellent news to hear they were able to get that equipment in, and of course that anyone could still be alive is simply incredible.

Fantastic news on such a heartbreaking event.

18. That was uncalled for
I share BTA's pride that the Israelis were able to rescue these victims of this horrific quake after six days. They performed their difficult tasks excellently and deserve recognition for it. I think your remark cheapens what they did by implying that because people may criticize Israel for some things, they may not laud them for other efforts, such as their heroism in this case. I'm a frequent critic of Israel's actions, but not in this case. The Israeli responders performed selflessly and with bravery and the whole world should be proud of them. I know I am.
Leave your politics aside for a moment and just appreciate as a human being what they did for their fellow human beings, like I am doing.

21. +1
I've been critical, too, of many governmental policies, but the heroic efforts of these incredible rescue teams totally supersede politics. They are all just people helping fellow human beings and they should be recognized for the wonderful heroes that they are... O8)
