Source: Newsadvanced.com

APPOMATTOX—Multiple people were killed in an Appomattox County shooting Tuesday afternoon that sparked a manhunt involving more than 150 police officers from throughout the region, and damaged a state police helicopter.

Sgt. Thomas Molnar with Virginia State Police said during a 7 p.m. news conference that law enforcement had a suspect cornered in a small wooded area behind a home off Snapps Mill Road between Concord and the Town of Appomattox, north of U.S. 460. 9. Thanks! I'm safe, it's my parents I'm worried about
They're on the next road, but my pop said it's fine over there. Most likely just some crazy fundie who thought Brown's win was the next sign that he should get on his raptor and kill his family, just like it says in the bible (the one in his head). It's just ironic that we moved to east bumblef*ck VA to slow down and have a peaceful life and this crap crops up right next door.

12. Well if you hear more shooting hit the deck
preferably behind solid cover.

The last time we had an incident round these parts... I surprised the cops... I mean I took cover like behind a car engine in the street... yes they did ask a question.

14. I keep debating on getting a gun myself
with some of these wignuts down here stocking up, like this guy will turn out to be. But I can't bring myself to do it...yet. Maybe a moat with alligators or something instead?

16. If you can't don't
but solid cover, more than just a wall...

I was a medic in Mexico and we had a few ahem shootouts.

Hell the drug dealers killed one of my rigs.

Bullet met radiator...

We were on a ditch... long story... I always carried a hand held radio, that night that hand held saved our lives.

18. I did joke about gun turrets on more than one occassion though
but I think gators and moats, and a big fence would be cooler. I've fired many a gun, and I'm a hell of a shot, but I just haven't gone so far as to buy one yet. But some of the crazies like that guy shooting make me think about it in more depth.

22. Thanks! But please tell me it's not that often lol
The year I moved to Lynchburg, Jerry Falwell keeled over. So I thought to myself...hmm shit, maybe I should have moved sooner? But then came that nut at VA Tech shooting people and that LU kid with the pipe bombs...jeez seems like it was safer in the city up north.

23. I don't live in your neighborhood
Cali may have it's issues, but we don't have that many who go nuts.

Now doing that Medic shtick south of the border, crazy stuff one does as a kid, lets just say if you ever watch traffic, what do you want me to confirm? Or actually tell you how it actually went down? Most of it actually happened... sort off.

These days I stay home, but when the fire works go off... I can still hug the ground.

6. I think the cops probably make up the other 100 or so
cousins in the guy's family. "Looky here Billy Bob, c'mon out there and let's set a while and talk it out over some catfish heads".

17. I figured 1/3rd of my family are cops in NJ, 1/3rd firemen in NJ
and the other 1/3rd are programmers (my 3rd, the nerdy 3rd) so no harm meant by generalizing cops. If anything, I was generalizing central VA persons, but that's wrong too.

Some of my family moved down to VA to join other family and help out, take it a bit easier, slow down a bit, but this nutter was a surprise and kind of ironic.

My bet is that this shooter is a teabagger who snapped for whatever reason (comes and goes for them) and I'm actually very happy there's so many cops on the scene. But he's definitely a cousin kisser and I'll bet at least some of those cops are his relatives. I just hope they catch him quick.

Lots of cop bashing goes on here I often disagree and am labeled a repuke for my stance. So I was just checking. I hope they do catch the guy and that your family stays safe.

21. Thanks! Its funny actually, because half of the cops in my family
actually crap on other cops. It depends on who/when/where/why. Like they'll say "those cops" in "that town" suck, but we're cool over here. I see some people jump on bad cop stories too and act like it's all of them, but that's just yet another bias. I knew cops who are true blue and I know some who truly suck. So we're on the same page :)

2. Eight dead!
I've been watching news all night and haven't heard a word about this. How horrible. Are mass killings so mundane now that they aren't newsworthy?

8. Hey they are doing better, they are actually like covering
two...

They usually fixate on one... and this one WOULD be the ideal one.

Maybe they are starting to get that chew gum and walk at the same time.

Am I getting too cynical.

but then again, mass shootings aren't mundane in the UK.

Eight killed in Virginia shooting

Shots fired at police helicopter during search for gunman

Virginia police during search for gunman

A manhunt involving more than 100 police and helicopters with thermal imaging was under way today for a gunman who killed eight people in Virginia. Police said Christopher Speight, 39, had fled to the woods, violently resisting efforts to take him in and nearly shooting down a police helicopter.

State police said officers had surrounded Speight near a home in Appomattox, where seven bodies were found. An eighth victim was found barely alive on the side of a road and died on the way to the hospital. The discovery of the eighth victim led police to Speight.

The shootings occurred just before lunchtime yesterday. All the victims were adult men and women, Thomas Molnar from Virginia state police said. Police refused to speculate on a motive and would not say what type of weapon was used.

Speight's last known address was in the block where the shootings occurred. Police would not say whether all the victims had been shot at the home where most of the bodies were found. Nor would they say whether the shootings had happened at Speight's address or another house.

There've also been what- 4 or 5 multiple workplace shootings in January? They're no longer "worthy" of national news in America either- even on a slow day.
