Al JazeeraA Polish official has confirmed that the infamous Nazi sign stolen last month from the former Auschwitz death camp has been returned to the museum there, a month after it was taken.
Bartosz Bartyzel, a spokesman for the museum, said that investigators had handed over the 'Arbeit Macht Frei' sign, which had hung over the gate of the camp in occupied Poland since World War II, on Thursday.
Five Poles are under arrest after confessing to taking part in the December 18, 2009 theft of the sign, which means "work sets you free" in German.
Authorities are debating whether to return the sign to its original place or to keep a replica there instead.
