The 1,300 Spanish troops deployed in Iraq are poised to wave goodbye to the southern provinces of Najaf and Qadissiyah after Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar's conservative government was trounced in general elections Sunday.
"Our mission is to follow orders and we are going to follow the orders of the new government," a Spanish military spokesman said on condition of anonymity.
His remarks come after Spanish prime minister-elect Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero announced Monday he intended to hold to his election promise and pull Spanish troops from Iraq by June 30 unless a UN-led multinational force takes over.
