North Korea responds angrily to South's talk of strike
Source: BBC News

North Korea has responded angrily to the South's suggestion that it could launch a pre-emptive strike against Pyonyang's nuclear facilities.

South Korea's defence minister had said this could occur if there were indications that the North was preparing a nuclear attack.

The North's official news agency said any attempt to do so would be treated as a declaration of war.

It added that it would be met with swift and decisive military action.

2. This is pretty common in terms of the back and forth stuff between the two countries
The North often over reacts to statements made by the government of South Korea. The South only has conventional weapons, but could bombard the North so hard, it would knock it back into the stone age. On top of that, it would have the US and Japan behind them as well as other countries. The fact is it's not going to happen, it's just all running of the mouths.

3. Both sides would be badly savaged in any exchange.
There are enough howitzers aimed at Seoul to level it in one or two volleys.

Hope cooler heads prevail

6. I agree
This is all just mindless noise. One big cycle of nothing. Unfortunately the N. Korean elites are so firmly entrenched that it would take outside force for the government to change. Some have posited that the dirty little secret about N. Korea is that the South actually doesn't wish reunification at all, as it would make reconstituting Germany look like an economic picnic and severely impact S. Korean prosperity, which many aren't just aren't interested in. China too greatly fears instability in N. Korea and the streams of starving refugees that would show up at their border. It's really sad and doesn't seem to have a lot of prospects of changing.

8. I agree if reunification ever happens, it's going to be expensive as hell
And dealing with the people who are now under a regime that has oppressed them so hard, once they come out of that they will be shell shocked to find out what is REALLY happening in the world. I also think China might feel more threatened by a reunited Korea which shares their border, then the current government (even though the current government is whacked).

5. Aren't North and South Korea still in a technical state of war?
No armistice was ever signed, only a ceasefire. So why would a South Korean attack be a "declaration of war"? Damn, the official news agency is full of morons.
