Haiti relief lacks leadership, says Italian expert
Source: BBC News

A senior Italian official has strongly criticised the Haiti earthquake relief operation, saying it could have been managed much better.

Guido Bertolaso, the head of Italy's civil protection service, said there was a lack of leadership in the international aid operation.

He also criticised US forces in Haiti, saying troops had no training in running a civilian relief operation.

3. Hmmm...what sort of expert is this guy? ...
If he is an Italian from Italy, then why--if the US is so bad at relief efforts--did not Italy manage to be on the scene at the beginning?

If, on the other hand, he is merely a mouthpiece for Chavez(et al), then why not fly his true colors.

Gonna have to put up with a lot of loudmouths and whiners before this is over.

4. JESUS F CHRIST
This earthquake hit an island nation that has little infrastructure, corrupt police and politics, desperately poor people and a disaster that killed 200K +. Combine that with the fact that most of the city streets are littered with bodies and rubble - making many impassable - you have the perfect storm.

OF COURSE things could have been managed better, but to criticize when EVERYTHING is being done as fast as it can serves no purpose other than airtime.

There will be time in the future to be nit picky and make plans to be better prepared. However, when something this big hits no amount of prep work can overcome the scale of disaster.

There will always be some armchair asshole to criticize from afar....

7. This armchair asshole is the man that won praise for his handling
of Italy's big Abruzzo quake in 2009.

15. The United States would never give up control of Haiti to anyone.
They let Canada and France share a little but that's it.

14. Some of the African sites have picked up on it to
"When there is an emergency, it triggers a vanity parade. Lots of people go there anxious to show that their country is big and important, showing solidarity," he said.

He told Italian TV channel RAI he hoped it was "the last time the world acts in this way".
Mr Bertolaso, a government minister, said it was logical and "commendable" for the US to lead the relief efforts, but "too many officers" meant they had not been able to find a capable leader.

"We're missing a leader, a co-ordination capacity that goes beyond military discipline," he said.

"It's a truly powerful show of force, but it's completely out of touch with reality.

12. I wonder why Haiti's police and politics are corrupt.
I wonder why their infrastructure is so underdeveloped.

What is it about Haiti's history that has led to such a lack of development of its civil society?

Hmmmmmmmmm.

5. Maybe because of what the b*sh cabal did to our military, what military we still have left to
this kind of thing..... They drained the money, the equipment and the personnel for their little war party, now they are either worn out or still occupied elsewhere.
