US commander signals peace talks with Taliban
Source: BBC

Nato's top commander in Afghanistan has said increased troop levels could bring a negotiated peace with the Taliban.

US Gen Stanley McChrystal told the UK's Financial Times newspaper that there had been "enough fighting".

He said a political solution in all conflicts was "inevitable". His remarks came as the top UN envoy in Kabul said it was time to talk to the militants.

....

"As a soldier, my personal feeling is that there's been enough fighting," Gen McChrystal added.

One of the last people I'd have expected to say that.

3. I think the answer is too simplistic...
Besides, we are told that we are supposed to listento the Generals. Does that mean we should listen to them when they tell the government it is time to negotiate peace.

Also, if the Generals are saying negotiate peace, that is a clear indication that they see the war as unwinable, and that it is time to go home.

5. Maybe the Taliban can explain where W's $43,000,000 in May 2001 went?
Imagine if they helped invest in 9/11 with it. Just imagine.

6. Give them enough $ for the oil/land rights this time
My understanding was that Cheney didn't like the amount they asked for last time we were talking peace (during the W admin) and they left unhappy and continued the fight. I'm fresh outta link, tho.

7.  General McChrystal is a great leader

It is a shame we don't have more people like him serving in the military.

I assume that Pakistan will most likely come up with the same kind of solution when dealing with its own Taliban insurgency.
