Witness details threat in church shooting (Dr. Tiller)

WICHITA, Kan., Jan. 25 (UPI) -- A 51-year-old man accused of fatally shooting an abortion provider in a church in Wichita, Kan., also threatened an usher, a witness testified Monday.

The Wichita (Kan.) Eagle said Gary Hoepner, who was serving as an usher at Reformation Lutheran Church on May 31, testified that Scott Roeder threatened him with a gun after the suspect shot abortion provider George Tiller.

Hoepner said he and fellow usher, George Tiller, were inside the church when a man he later identified as Roeder approached Tiller and shot the doctor. "I noticed a movement from the side," Hoepner testified. "And I looked up and this man had walked up to George put a gun to his head and shot."

Hoepner claimed he chased after the suspect as the man attempted to flee the church, only to face the individual's gun and a threat of "I'll shoot you." "I stopped," Hoepner added. "I thought about my wife, who wasn't there that day. ... I'd already seen him shoot one person."

He went into a church during a service and murdered one of its members.

3. I don't know how these people justify killing a person in a house of worship. I don't think Jesus

would approve of this. Two wrongs don't make a right. If you don't like the laws than change them. Simple, period. These people are nothing more than home grown terrorist.

4. Some laws can never be changed...

...without causing a serious tear in our societal fabric; one so terrible as to leave these people shunned for all time. When it comes to a woman's right to decide over her own body, they choose a losing issue. They need to learn to accept the wheels of progress, instead of being flattened by same.

6. I don't know how Roeder will weasel out of this one. A "necessity defense" can't protect threats

against innocent people.

8. He's not allowed a necessity defense. He's only allowed a voluntary manslaughter

defense that allows him to argue that he had a real but incorrect belief that his violence would protect another from immanent harm. One expects "immanent" to mean something like "right here, right now" so he's got a bit of an uphill stretch explaining how voluntary manslaughter fits the facts: he took a gun to that particular church, singled out Tiller, then fled and ditched the weapon

I'm afraid they are going to just slap his wrist and let him off in a year or 2.
