Haiti suspends ties with CARICOM
Edited on Mon Mar-15-04 06:53 PM by eablair3
the newly installed Haitian "government" first withdraws its Ambassador to Jamaica (it had already previously recalled this ambassador and all of the Aristide ambassadors anyway) and now suspends membership in CARICOM.

Haiti suspends ties with CARICOM

www.chinaview.cn 2004-03-16 06:46:20

HAVANA, March 15 (Xinhuanet) -- Haitian appointed Prime Minister Gerard Latortue announced Monday he temporarily suspended his country's membership in the Caribbean Community and Common Market (CARICOM) and withdrew Haiti's ambassador from Jamaica, reports from Haiti's capital Port-au-Prince stated.

The announcement was issued after Haiti's former President Jean-Bertrand Aristide arrived in Jamaica from exile in the Central African Republic.

Latortue said he would reconsider Haiti's relations with CARICOM because the bloc had voiced support to Aristide's presidency when considering his ouster was clouded by unclear circumstances.

CARICOM echoed Aristide when he denounced he had been "kidnapped" and forced to leave Haiti by United States troops.

3. Spiteful, spiteful Latortue!

In fact, this sort of vengeful, destructive foreign relations insult really has the 'flavor' of a Bush administration move, doesn't it? Perhaps CARICOM now represents the 'Old Caribbean', hmm?

I wonder if Latortue received these orders over the phone from Washington, or if Ambassador Foley delivered them in person?
