The Kansas City Star
Brad Gautney returned from Haiti on Sunday with a message of hope.
“The Haitian people are the strongest and most hopeful people I’ve ever met,” said Gautney, who spent 10 days in Haiti as part of a medical team from Leawood-based One5 Foundation, a medical relief organization.
He plans to return Thursday to continue the work.
Gautney said a woman named Maude was brought into the Port-au-Prince hospital where the medical team was working. She had been in the rubble of a collapsed building for five days, and her leg needed to be amputated.
“The whole time she just smiled because she was alive,” Gautney said, adding that the woman later told him she was a nurse and she was looking forward to recovering so she could help her people.
