Poll: American public fed up with Washington
Source: MSNBC

70% say government isn't working well; Obama approval back at 50%

WASHINGTON - As President Barack Obama prepares to deliver his first State of the Union address Wednesday night, he will be speaking to an American public that’s fed up with Congress, the country’s two main political parties, and the federal government, according to a new NBC News/Wall Street Journal poll.

Only 28 percent believe the federal government is “working well” or even works “okay,” versus seven in 10 who think it’s “unhealthy,” “stagnant” or needs large reforms.

What’s more, a whopping 93 percent believe there’s too much partisan infighting; 84 percent think the special interests have too much influence over legislation; nearly three-quarters say that not enough has been done to regulate Wall Street and the banking industry; and an equal 61 percent complain that both Democrats and Republicans in Congress aren’t willing to compromise.

Only 27 percent say they blame him for not being able to find solutions to the country’s problems. By contrast, 48 percent blame Republicans in Congress and 41 percent blame congressional Democrats.

Obama’s numbers, in fact, are virtually unchanged from last week’s poll, which was released on the day of the Massachusetts election.

40. They have the guns, police, military and crowd control weaponry on their side, that's why.
Combined with the sentiment that we're nothing but barely useful pieces of dogshit to them, and much of America hasn't yet figured that out . .. well, here we are.

Too bad the US doesn't have a governor general who can call a double dissolution of both houses of Congress.

11. This time "smooth talk" and lofty rhetoric won't fly.
The American People voted for "CHANGE".
The time for talk & promises is GONE.
Produce the CHANGE we voted for, or step aside.

72% of Democrats in swing states support a viable Public Option.
Time to REPRESENT....get out IN FRONT and LEAD.
If need be, call us to Washington to STAND beside him on the Capitol Steps.
Millions would come.

OR,
it was all just a smooth con.

"There are forces within the Democratic Party who want us to sound like kinder, gentler Republicans. I want us to compete for that great mass of voters that want a party that will stand up for working Americans, family farmers, and people who haven't felt the benefits of the economic upturn."---Paul Wellstone

6. a year ago....
....the Dems had the hopes and dreams of a desperate America in their hands....instead of strongly and forcibly serving the peoples needs, they've placated the Right and serviced their corporate agenda....

....what has been lost is possibly now irrecoverable....the Dems have lost the trust and confidence of the American people....

7. They probably did this poll expecting O to have a shitty approval rating
%50 after one year is quite normal, actually.

Their little corporate media narrative was messed up. Poor MSM.

18. Given the uglamorous decisions he has had to make (good and bad)
and absolute deluge of media (they likes fancy cocktail parties) that is not that bad.

This poll is lower than most that put him at 55-57%

12. The Retardicans keep saying Obama isn't doing enough
I wish he'd wise up and ask them every time they said that, "What's YOUR plan besides giving more massive tax breaks to the rich and corporations?" Remember when they showed up with their 19 page Budget Alternative back in the early part of 09 that had no numbers in it? Now, that was high comedy! Obama needs to ask Repukes over and over to outline THEIR plans because they are sure to be stupid as hell and highly entertaining.

28. I think calling them the Party of No does say all that & effectively, too. However, I thought
the complaint of the Republicans was that he had done too much. Too much bail out, too much GM, too much deficit, too much stimulus, etc.

15. Well, they should have been fed up with it in 2001
And that includes a whole lot of people here, who seem more outraged now than they did for the last eight years.

Interestingly, however, in this poll, only 27% (all Republicans, presumably) blame the president.

42. Yes they will.
It won't help, of course, but that's what they'll do.

Because they handed the reigns to the Democrats and the Dems collectively said, "We can't do anything for you (but we can do a lot for your bank!)"

So people will take the only other option they've got.

It said something like "this many people blame Republicans, this many people blame Democrats, and this many people blame President Obama," etc. I noticed that "corporations" didn't seem to be a choice. Shocking.

Has any poll, at any time, ANYWHERE in the history of the US, showed anything resembling soaring approval for Washington?

I mean honestly? "Americans unhappy with their government" has the news value of "Scientific study concludes that sky is blue"
