Traffickers targeting Haiti’s children, human organs, PM says

(CNN) -- Trafficking of children and human organs is occurring in the aftermath of the earthquake that devastated parts of Haiti, killed more than 150,000 people, and left many children orphans, Haitian Prime Minister Jean-Max Bellerive said Wednesday.

"There is organ trafficking for children and other persons also, because they need all types of organs," Bellerive said in an exclusive interview with CNN's Christiane Amanpour.

He did not give specifics, but asked by Amanpour if there is trafficking of children, Bellerive said, "The reports I received say yes."

Haiti is trying to locate displaced children and register them so they can either be reunited with other family members or put up for adoption, Bellerive said.

But, he said, illegal child trafficking is "one of the biggest problems that we have."

8. The rumors of organ harvesting are largely, if not totally, "urban legends"

many of which have been floating around central and south america for a few years now.

But, practically speaking, it would be near impossible.

Tissue death begins just a few minutes after the heart stops and breathing ceases. To harvest any organ, like a heart or kidney, it would have to be removed by a skilled surgeon within minutes, it then would have to be placed in a specially chilled container to prevent further tissue damage (a cooler filled with ice won't do), and flown to where it is needed within hours, or at most, a day. Even if one did fly in a "harvesting team", and they prayed upon the injured and/or dying that still fill the tent hospitals in Port-au-Prince, it's highly unlikely that any organs obtained would be transported to facility for transplant (again, a modern hospital, not more than a few hours away, with a organ recipient who is waiting and prepped for a cross-matched donor, and a surgical team willing to skirt any number of laws).

Sex trafficking, OTOH, is very likely. Quite possibly even by those who show up to "take the orphans out of harms way" and affiliated with reputable organizations. Someone needs to follow up on every child removed from Haiti, and do so for many months to come.

I mean there is the urban legand about the guy partying hard and waking up in a bathtub of ice only to discover an organ is missing.

However, just like sex trafficking, the children can be removed from Haiti and transported to a blackmarket doctor. There have been many documented cases of China harvesting organs from death row inmates to meet the demand for organs.

I would not dismiss this so freely.

The "urban legend" that I was talking about were the stories circulating about the organ hunters in Brazil. Death squads that supposedly hunted people (tourists, children in the poorer areas, etc) for their organs. Turns out, it was all BS. Mostly started by the promotion of a movie.

The reason it wouldn't be that easy is that even if you kidnap an orphan child, you still have to match a donor to a person willing to pay big $$ to the black market. And it's more complex that a simple blood type. Genetically speaking, organ donors from Haiti are likely not to be a close match to, say, a Chinese, Russian, or European client.

Again, it's possible. It's just not that likely.

Personally, I think it is nothing more than fear-mongering and in some cases bigotry run amok (see below). As for the child exploitation, that seems more likely, but at this point, it is likely very difficult. However, as time progresses it will become much easier to kidnap and exploit children.

I remained skeptic out of no where sponsors; the outpouring Haitian orphan sponsors...and the haste, the haste this was done without ever questioning these so called sponsored-parents. By Gawd, what we don't know yet is what scares me.

within easy fishing boat reach. Live kids could be removed by boat and operated on at other sites.

There would be few sterile sites on Haiti that could be used for this, much less air traffic to get the organs out of the country.
