http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=564&ncid=564&e=2&u=/nm/20040315/ts_nm/iraq_usa_spain_dc_1WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. officials called Spanish troops a critical part of the Iraqi occupation force on Monday and analysts said their possible withdrawal could further tax an American military already strained nearly to the breaking point.
"The Spaniards have performed heroically and are critical to our efforts here," Dan Senor, chief spokesman for the U.S.-led Coalition Provisional Authority, said in Baghdad, after Spain's incoming leader indicated his intention to withdraw the 1,300 Spanish troops in the U.S.-led Iraq (news - web sites) force.
The Spaniards represent less than 1 percent of the international troops there, but Spain has been a staunch ally on Iraq at a time when traditional friends such as Germany and France have vigorously opposed U.S. policy.
