(IN) Senate OKs same-sex marriage ban
Source: Indy Star

The Indiana Senate revived a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriages Thursday, approving the measure and sending it to the House, where it's likely to meet a quick death. The 38-10 vote marked the fourth time the Senate has approved such a provision, which must be approved by two separately elected legislatures and voters before being placed into the state's founding document.

State law already bans same-sex marriages, but conservatives have pushed for the amendment, arguing that it would prevent activist judges from overturning the statute.

"Marriage is one of the foundations of our society," said Sen. Carlin Yoder, R-Middlebury, who authored the amendment. "It is something that I firmly believe needs to be protected."

:puke: Let's hope whatever common sense still lies with the Indiana Legislature will squash this ugly thing like a bug.

1. Yoder, you piece of shit...
ever think about protecting it from DIVORCE? Every day we hear about heterosexual couples cheating (John Edwards, Tiger Woods), but I don't see politicians coming out against hetero marriage.

Shit, my own father has been married FOUR TIMES, and he has the nerve to say marriage is "precious" and needs to be "protected". These folks are mean-spirited homophobes, who don't care one whit about marriage.

It would be nice if Obama would address this issue - but sadly, he seems to feel the same way.

11. Fellow Hoosier here
:hi: I don't think the rest of the country sees Indiana as backwards or hicks. I could be wrong. It just seems that there are bigger problems for government to focus on than sticking their noses into marriage. It's a contract under the law. Why are some adults able to enter into this contract when others are not.

But this problem isn't unique to Indiana. It's going on in a lot places. Their energy would be better spent getting people back to work..... You know the wedding industry generates a lot of revenue and jobs, opening this up to more people would help people make money and the state earns too from the licenses. It's not really about common sense though, is it?

14. Hoosier...?
Interesting history on the word...

From: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoosier

"In other parts of the country, the word has been adapted for other uses (see Other uses). In St. Louis, Missouri, the word is used in a derogatory fashion in similar context to "hick" or "white trash".<2> “Hoosier” also refers to the cotton-stowers, both black and white, who moved cotton bales from docks to the holds of ships, forcing the bales in tightly by means of jackscrews. A low-status job, it nevertheless is referred to in various sea shanty lyrics. For example, Shanties from the Seven Seas<3> includes lyrics that reference hoosiers."

Looks like there are multiple connotations, meanings, and histories, leading to how people variously associate Indiana residents with different sets of social/cultural baggage.

17. Thanks for that info
I had never looked into the meaning of the word. It was something I and my siblings had heard from early on in my life from my Chicago born and raised parents and other family members. It was always said with affection and pride. To me it is a positive word. My intention was not to insult or belittle anyone. Thanks for the info.

6. Does that mean Kraft can't marry Cadbury?
it's all so confusing with whose a person, whose not a person, who decides what and all that, it's enough to make one ignore the system and just do what you will, you know? I think we used to call it Freedom.

7. If it is a foundation of society, it mustn't need protecting cuz it is so strong, Yoderboy

Maybe they should outlaw flights to Las Vegas for quickie marriages and divorces - that would be more to their point, but of course that would go over well eh?

10. Yes, in a state in which they cut education funding
so drastically, school systems are cutting pay and laying off teachers, the biggest problem is gay marriage.
