Years ago, I was foreman on a child sex abuse case. Two week trial. By the end, we had ZERO doubt of the guy's guilt. We basically walked in the jury room, I took one poll, no one had any questions, concerns, etc. Guilty. His lawyer did poll us one by one in the courtroom, but there were no appeals. (I think his LAWYER was relieved he was convicted, just my opinion.) You feel really empowered in that jury room; victims' lives are in your hands, and their only hope for any justice at all lies with your integrity. We all took that seriously. Sometimes, there's no doubt of guilt. So, no, it's not difficult.

In this case, the guy gets on the stand under oath and says he did it, he plotted and planned it, he had alternative ways to do it. I realize he had moral objections to abortion, but what if we call decided to just go kill people who did things we objected to? I'm a vegan, and am against killing other creatures for humans' benefit. Does this mean I can go shoot slaughterhouse workers? Of course not! I may be horrified and deeply saddened by what they do, but it IS legal in this country.

And this case has nothing to do with Roe. Yes, the victim was an OB/GYN who performed abortions, but the connection ends there. This is a simple criminal case that that got intense coverage because the victim was one of the few remaining doctors in the U.S. that performed third-trimester abortions, and he was murdered by Roeder for ideological reasons.

Which of the nine justices would side with him simply because they agree with him on the abortion issue? There's absolutely no basis for thinking that SCOTUS would overturn with his conviction. In fact, there's a 99.9% chance that they never even grant cert on the case, for a few reasons:

1) He's serving life in prison. SCOTUS reviews death penalty cases to make sure that everything is kosher, but they don't typically examine life sentences.

2) His guilt is unquestionable. He confessed to the murder.

3) There is no compelling constitutional issue here for SCOTUS to examine. He's not a juvenile, it's not a crual and unusual sentence, and there were no problems that we know of in jury selection.

No way does Roeder even win a date before the SCOTUS. I'd bet my life savings on this if I could at 1 to 1.

I get the breaking news from the Wichita Eagle online and it says jury finds him Guilty of First degree murder. Yesterday he testified on his own behalf, and was unrepentant. the conservative Supreme Court has set up Roe v Wade to be defeated when it demolished long-standing precedent and ruled that corporations may now contribute like drunken sailers to or against campaigns. Not to change the subject, but this chilling SCOTUS decision never leaves my mind, and if a Republican president is elected in 2012 it's my belief we can kiss another "law of the land" goodbye. Many of us will say, naw, Roe v Wade will never be overturned 'cuz it's such a good fundraiser, but I am beginning to disagree.

And I'm not even totally pro-choice in that I believe, for myself, that it is wrong, and if anyone I cared about wanted to have an abortion I would hope to talk them out of it. However, I will defend forever and to infinity (redundancy included for emphasis!) the right of any woman to make that choice for herself and for her family, based on their own beliefs, circumstances, and religious convictions. And their whole outlook is so ludicrous -- they do not "get" the sickening irony of killing someone to "prevent" that person from killing -- I mean, to kill someone AND be against killing? They just looked stunned, like they were living in the 1800's and just woke up to 2010.

I know that Roeder didn't meet the criteria for seeking the death penalty, but perhaps that law should be amended to include ANYONE who repeatedly confesses to a crime. In cases like this one, there is no doubt that the defendant is guilty, and death should be swift and just.

The bigger tragedy here, besides Tiller's death, is the fact that it is one less ob/gyn willing to provide abortions in the United States. And who can blame doctors? I'm finishing law school and soon starting training to be a doctor- and I would NEVER consider doing abortions. And this decision isn't because I have any moral qualms about abortion-quite the contrary-I support Roe v. Wade and all accompanying cases. I am just not willing to risk my life and the lives of my future family members to perform these services. I know many present and retired ob/gyns who feel the same way. Why should they risk their asses when this country isn't willing to put some teeth behind enforcement of the right to choose. Most days when I drive by my local clinic, I see at least a couple of protesters outside. Now I'm not saying that these protesters endorse what Roeder did, but they undoubtedly weep more for the fetuses than for Tiller, which is unconscionable. We need stricter laws banning all protesting outside of clinics. We need to start seeing more arrests and investigations of so-called "pro-life" (but really, call them what they are, anti-choice) websites and the Secret Service should be involved in investigating right-wing sites that celebrate the murder of PHYSICIANS performing a LEGAL procedure.

I heard an verdict had been decided but not announced I KNEW it would be guilty because the verdict came back so quickly. As a matter of fact I think it only took as long as it did because some of the jurors probably had to take a potty break and then complete the paper work.

When the verdict was announced I was not surprised. While he says we was concerned for babies he didn't seem concerned for Tiller, a human being, father, and husband. He was not concerned for his wife who has lost her beloved husband. He was not concerned for the CHILDREN who called him Dad. Yeah he cared about the children alright.

Sadly this verdict does not bring him back. While justice may have been done, does the solace that the correct verdict has been rendered comfort the hearts who are grieving over their loved one, their family member, their friend?
