G.O.P. Adopts ‘Purity’ Pledge After Revisions
Source: NY Times

HONOLULU — The Republican National Committee on Friday approved a watered-down resolution designed to deal with a demand by conservative committee members that candidates agree to support a list of conservative positions as a condition of receiving financial support from the party.

The original so-called purity resolution set off intense opposition from Republican leaders who feared it would complicate efforts to recruit candidates for elective office, and would damage the party’s image at a time when it was trying to expand its appeal. The resolution would have required candidates to support 8 of 10 positions on issues including abortion, immigration and the war in Iraq in order to receive party endorsements and campaign money.

Its opponents included the party’s national chairman, Michael Steele, who called it a litmus test.

Under the compromise, the Republican National Committee “urges its leadership and the leadership of all Republican organizations” to examine the record of candidates to determine if they support positions expressed in the party’s platform. It also “urges” that no financial support be given to candidates who do not support the platform.

Maybe they could give Purity Rings to those who agree; I understand they're very popular in conservative circles.

By the way, why is the RNC holding its meeting in an exotic place like Hawaii? Why not hold it in the USA?

3. Hawaii? Probably to minimize coverage...
from cash strapped media outlets. Do you suppose that sex with pages; men's room pick-ups; and Argentinian mistresses are gonna be on the agenda.

4. "Lips to Limbaugh's Butt." Isn't that the only pledge they need?
It may not be pure (yuck), but it sure as hell is the pledge they all take so far as I can see.

5. On the other hand
why should Democratic officeholders who disagree with our core values get any party money? Who here wants to give DNC bucks to Blue Dogs?

6. Go ahead and let them strain the sieve to it's most concentrated wingnuts
The electorate is so stupid, I don't know if that'll keep them from voting for guys that tell them to their faces that they're going to start a war with Yemen and repeal Social Security, but one can hope.

8. That's how I see it too.
As a NYC Yank living in VA, I am astounded by the number of ppl down here that vote republican because they think repubs give a shit about them. It seems to be more of a "values" thing in VA. Of course they run this drivel past you while drinking swill at the local watering hole.

16. The electorate isn't stupid, just infected with rightwing brainwashing
Our President is not even reluctant to reinforce some of that brainwashing.

Many DU'ers are plagued with that type of thinking as well.

Calling the American people stupid may be some solace but it's just the type of thinking that leads to inaction on our part. Why talk to strangers, why knock on a door, why make phone calls if the people are stupid? They are not. And those here who call Average Americans on both sides of the divide stupid are ignorant. Look it up, there is a difference.

20. If they accidentally break the pledge, they can always "recommit" like this:
http://www.hollywoodpurityball.com/pledge.php

Purity Pledges
For Fathers
I (Daughter's Name)'s Father, choose before to God to war for my daughter's purity. I acknowledge myself as the authority and protector of my daughter's virginity, and pledge to be a man of integrity as I lead, guide, and pray over my daughter and her virginity – as the High Priest of my home.

For Virgins
I (Name) pledge my purity to my father, my future/husband and my Creator. I recognize that virginity is my most precious gift to offer to my future husband. I will not engage in sexual activity of any kind before marriage but will keep my thought and my body pure as a very special present for the one I marry.

For Secondary Virgins (those who have engaged in promiscuous behavior) and wish to recommit themselves to lives of purity)
I (Name) re–pledge my purity to my father, my future/husband and my Creator. I now recognize that virginity is my most precious gift to offer my future husband. I deeply regret and will never again engage in sexual activity of any kind before marriage but will keep my thought and my body pure as a very special present for the one I marry.

23. There's also the Secondary Virgin's Pledge of Despoilment
I (Name), was pure at birth but born of original sin. I allowed my body to be despoiled in a selfish, careless display of reckless abandon. After entering into a period of deep regret for my sin, I recommitted my purity to my Creator, my family and to my future husband. Through prayer and reflection I came to understand, Lord, that You gave the world sex to perpetuate the human race but You made it fun because You loved us. Tonight, I cast aside my false sense of guilt and commit my life to the pursuit of sexual knowledge because the most special present I can give the one I marry is to be great in bed for him.
