March 16 (Bloomberg) -- Workers at Venezuela's subway company in the capital of Caracas said more than 200 of them could lose their jobs for signing petitions seeking a recall of President Hugo Chavez, El Universal reported.
Ricardo Sancione, who heads the union at CA Metro de Caracas, said 211 workers signed the recall petitions, and 27 have been threatened with firings by management because of their action, the newspaper said.
Sancione said operations at the subway, Venezuela's largest, would be jeopardized by firings because the of the many petition signers in the company's technical department.
Workers at state power company Enelven SA have been fired for signing the petitions, the country's Energy Ministry reported. Workers at state-owned oil company Petroleos de Venezuela SA are also facing similar threats. The National Electoral Council, which said it may decide later this month whether a recall will proceed, said Friday threats and dismissals linked to the recall are illegal.
