BellSouth continues job cuts; 778 layoffs planned

ATLANTA (AP) — BellSouth Corp. plans to eliminate another 778 jobs, including 66 in Louisiana, by the end of June, citing low work volume.

The jobs being eliminated include technical workers and employees in repair center positions, collections and clerical work, BellSouth spokeswoman LeAnn Hansen said.

“Volume of work has decreased,” Hansen said. “Continuing economic pressures and changes in the telecom industry have led to the surplus.”

The largest number of cuts, 296, will come in Georgia. The rest will be spread among the other eight Southeastern states where Atlanta-based BellSouth is the dominant local phone provider.

I mean, that's what he said at George's Excellent Economy Photo-op Adventure last week!

2. This may not necessarily be the economy, but
it could be largely due to a change in phone services, particularly cheaper cell phones and calling plans.

BellSouth may just be falling victim to their inability to compete with the cell phone companies.
