Two Westerners Killed in Iraq; Bush Urges Unity
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=578&ncid=578&e=7&u=/nm/20040316/ts_nm/iraq_dc

BAGHDAD (Reuters) - Guerrillas shot dead two Western engineers and six Iraqis Tuesday, bringing to eight the number of foreign civilians killed in ambushes in Iraq (news - web sites) in the past eight days.

President Bush (news - web sites) urged European allies to stick with the United States in Iraq, a day after Spain's new leader signaled he would pull his troops out in a major shift from Madrid's previous pro-American foreign policy.

"It's essential that we remain side-by-side with the Iraqi people," Bush told reporters during a meeting with Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende.

"Al Qaeda understands the stakes. Al Qaeda wants us out of Iraq because al Qaeda wants to use Iraq as an example of defeating freedom and democracy," said Bush.

3. Just like Viet Nam
Didn't the justification for that eventually become that it was a contest of willpower between the U.S. and U.S.S.R. (fought partly through the proxy armies of the Viet Cong, NVA and ARVN, as well as with U.S. troops, not to mention the unfortunate civilian bystanders)?

To recap:
- stumble into a mistake (generous interpretation)
- refuse to abandon the mistake for fear of looking weak
- repeat every generation, then rinse (with blood)

4. An ironic statement from a US General
"These deliberate attacks show a total disregard for innocent human life," Brigadier General Carter Ham, commander of U.S. forces in Mosul, said in a statement.

"Killing and injuring innocent Iraqi citizens shows the murderous and cynical intent of terrorists to undermine freedom and progress in Iraq."

I in no way mean to equate the two but that does seem a strange thing to say given .......well.......the war and all.

5. Do you think he sees his phoney "war" collapsing?
President Bush (news - web sites) urged European allies to stick with the United States in Iraq,

What allies would that be? Poland I know and I think there is Japan. Is he scared they are all going to abandon him? I suppose if there are elections coming up, there will be some anxiety . He insists on making the connection between Al Queda and Iraq--damn it!--why doesn't someone finally challenge his stupid idiocy and conintued efforts to stir up fear and trembling amonsgst his own people,--someone has got to stop this act and stop these lies--sure,he can claim it is not a lie now--Al Queda must have moved in after the invasion along with the Israeli intelligence and host of others operating surreptitiously in the back alleys of Iraq.

I just wish someone would stop him mid sentence and bring to the fore that Al Queda was never based in Iraq and that SAddam was never connected with Al Queda or 9-11.

Is it too much to ask that someone stop the insanity and let the people know it is all a big PR campaign to get them to approve o f his murders of ten thousand people because Al Queda may have been thinking of going there or Saddam may have been thinking of starting a WMD program--this is unbelievable--that a man like this is allowed to do this to Americans with impunity.

6. 6 Foreign Civilians Killed In Iraq
In separate attacks on Tuesday, four Americans, three Iraqis and two Europeans were killed, increasing the toll of civilian workers slain by insurgents.

Four U.S. missionaries died in a drive-by shooting in the northern city of Mosul on Tuesday. A fifth American was being treated at a U.S. military hospital.

Hours later, reports emerged that two German civilians and two Iraqis, including a driver and a policeman, were killed in an ambush south of Baghdad.

Two Iraqi police were also wounded in the attack near the town of Mussayab, 45 miles south of Baghdad, said Dr. Jamal Kadhim, head of the emergency department at Mussayab General Hospital.
