Poll: Muslim countries, Europe question U.S. motives
http://www.usatoday.com/news/world/2004-03-16-international-poll_x.htm

WASHINGTON (AP) — A majority of people living in Jordan, Morocco, Pakistan and Turkey say they believe the U.S. is conducting its campaign against terror to control Mideast oil and to dominate the world, according to an international poll released Tuesday.
The governments in all four Muslim-majority countries have strong ties with the U.S. government.

A sizable number of people in France, Germany and Russia also have these suspicions about the campaign against terror, according to the Pew Global Attitudes Project.

2. More bad news...
This is bad news for Kerry. The way the press are spinning the Spain election and now this, people in the States do not will not want to be seen as siding with the appeasers or this group of countries. Kerry needs to head this off fast.

4. Only fools will buy the "appeasers" argument.
Edited on Tue Mar-16-04 03:21 PM by Bridget Burke
Although I agree that Kerry's folks need to get out their facts.

The Spanish people didn't want their country to help invade Iraq. How is voting for the RIGHT THING appeasement?

17. You are right, but
we evidently have a lot fools in this country. The thing I fear the most is it will be too late by the time they get it.

5. Bad news for Kerry?
I rather think it is bad news for Dumya. The world knows this is not Kerry's war.

8. I think this is where Kucinich could shine.
He can own this issue, and really, he has since the beginning.
The Rovian spin is such patent BS, that a little spine will go a long way.

Let Dennis stand in front of the mike, and see who walks away proud, and who needs a transfusion when all is said and done! This is not about who is the Dem nominee, this is about the truth.

10. a lot of people do not see an election as an appeasement but as
the voice of the people in a democracy. Appeaser is a Repuke term that has been applied over and over and over in order to set the meme in the brains of people who are scared out of their wits to begin with.

19. I don't necessarily agree
People either want to duck their heads from the real dangerous world or they want to try to blow up the world. Neither Bush nor Kerry has it right.

3. Osama took credit for 9/11?
People in the surveyed Muslim countries remain angry about U.S. policies, and even supportive of Osama bin Laden, the Saudi terrorist who took credit for the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks on the United States.

That's news to me.

7. IIRC...
Usamma gave kudos to the attackers, but denied any responsibility in connection to the attack. Maybe someone else has more info about this.

11. Ussamah said a variety of things
ranging from opportunistic to a bit of slightly grotesque backpatting, but none of them translates to "I did it" in any language. Indeed, the gist of it is "this wasn't me, but it's kinda nice anyway" (which is all he's said of past acts). This is not commendable, but is quite a far cry from what is claimed.

15. No, he never took credit for it. The US media spun what was
on the tapes and SAID he said that, but that was not the case. It is the same scam the media have pulled over and over again with all the bogus tapes and documents that have been found over the last three years. Pure spin.
We don't have any idea who did 9-11 because it has never been investigated.

12. related article: U.S. Credibility Hurt, Survey Finds
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A63816-2004Mar16.html

A year after U.S. forces invaded Iraq, resentment and suspicion of the United States has intensified abroad, with many people saying the war has undermined U.S. credibility and hurt, rather than helped, the war on terrorism, according to a new survey of attitudes in the United States and eight foreign countries.

The survey, released today by the Pew Global Attitudes Project, found that growing percentages of Europeans want foreign policy and security arrangements independent of the United States, and that anger toward America in predominantly Muslim countries "remains pervasive."

"Majorities in Germany, Turkey and France -- and half of the British and Russians -- believe the conflict in Iraq undermined the war on terrorism," the Pew Research Center for the People & the Press said in a summary of the findings. "At least half the respondents in the eight other countries view the U.S. as less trustworthy as a consequence of the war."

The results of the survey, which was conducted from Feb. 19 to March 3 in nine nations, appear likely to fuel debate in the U.S. presidential campaign. The Bush administration has challenged the presumptive Democratic nominee, Sen. John F. Kerry of Massachusetts, on his assertion last week that foreign leaders want him to defeat Bush in the November election.

13. Most Americans will ignore this type of information.
However, during the Olympic Games this summer I think it will become a bigger story and impossible to ignore. I expect the crowds at the Games to show some hostility to Americans. Republicans will resond with vitriolic hatred of course, but I don't know how average people will respond. It could hurt or help Bush.
