TACOMA -- A female teacher was shot and killed at Birney Elementary school Friday morning.

The shooting happened outside the schoole at 1202 S. 76th St. just before 8 a.m., which was before students arrived for the day.

Mark Fulghum with Tacoma police says the shooter and the victim knew each other, and the shooting was domestic-violence related.

The Tacoma School District would only say the teacher was a special-education teacher.

After the shooting, the gunman fled, but Pierce County Sheriff's deputies tracked him down at 166th and Canyon Road East. Fulghum says shots were fired and the suspect was in custody.

that every divorce in my state includes a "protection from abuse" order, even if there is no history of violence. Also, as it is now, with really no consequence other than being disqualified to own a gun and being required to maintain a reasonable distance from the petitioner/complainant, judges are relatively likely to issue an order in the interest of erring on the side of caution. If the penalty were more of a burden or punishment, judges would be much, much less likely to issue the order without some sort of evidence of abuse, IMHO. Now making it mandatory for convicted DA offenders, that might be good.

Perhaps the underlying reason you're seeing more is national, instant, sensational media coverage. Seeing more doesn't prove there actually are more, just that they're getting more attention (which does spur a feedback loop for those wanting 'fame'/'infamy'.)

I hate these little losers who think that they own their girlfriend, like some sort of cattle, and when the girlfriend leaves them, they should be killed because "If I can't have them, nobody can!" What a bunch of cowards. Even more cowardly was the fact that this guy pulled a suicide by cop, making someone else kill him instead of doing it to himself. If only he had just shot himself. It would have been one less oxygen-waster in the world.

38. The teacher wasn't his girlfriend.

The guy was just infatuated with her, but she wasn't interested in him. He started stalking her, so she got a restraining order against him, and he was arrested when he violated the restraining order.
