N.Y. Sen. Gillibrand: Paterson should resign

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, D-N.Y., today called for New York Gov. David Paterson to resign if allegations are true that he directed aides to intervene in a domestic-violence case.

In an interview with New York1, Gillibrand said if "all the allegations of the abuse of power are true, then the governor will be unable to govern, and he will have to step down."

Gillibrand's move marks a dramatic break with Paterson, a political patron who appointed her to the U.S. Senate last year.

Paterson, who abandoned his re-election bid Friday over the growing scandal, today issued a curt "no" to a reporter when asked if he planned to step down, The Times writes.

It got him to abandon re-election, it might get him out of the picture faster; he was, after all, unpopular long before this scandal broke.

7. Same exact thought popped in my head when I first read this.

6. Only a week or so ago ...

There were people here who scoffed at the first part of the story--a high level aide to the governor who had a history of abuse with women and stood accused of choking and terrorizing his current girlfriend ... yet remained a top aide to the highest office in the state. It was no "bombshell," they said. Really? I thought it was pretty shocking. I guess that is before they knew that the governor and the state police tried to interfere with the case and harassed the woman into not showing up in court.

It's depressing that high level officials feel that abuse is something to be swept under the rug. And some here, too ... at first, at least.

What's up with New York? Two governors brought down by their twisted behavior with regard to women. It feels like we need a fourth wave of feminism (or is it the fifth or sixth? Will it ever be done?).

To tell the truth, I can understand good old Illinois pay-to-play corruption better than I can all this.
