Spain's Next Prime Minister Says US Should Dump Bush*
Thursday, March 18, 2004; Page A23

MADRID, March 17 -- Prime Minister-elect Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero on Wednesday described the U.S. occupation of Iraq as "a fiasco" and suggested American voters should follow the example set by Spain and change their leadership by supporting Sen. John F. Kerry of Massachusetts for president in November.

"I said during the campaign I hoped Spain and the Spaniards would be ahead of the Americans for once," Zapatero said in an interview on Onda Cero radio. "First we win here, we change this government, and then the Americans will do it, if things continue as they are in Kerry's favor."

(snip)

Zapatero's implicit endorsement of Kerry, the presumptive Democratic nominee, was a surprising public repudiation of a sitting U.S. president by the incoming leader of an allied country and fellow NATO member.

Members of Spain's Popular Party -- which will become the opposition when Zapatero, a 43-year-old lawyer, takes office next month -- immediately criticized Zapatero's remarks, saying they demonstrated his inexperience in diplomacy.

"I think that was extremely un-careful," said Gustavo de Aristegui, a Popular Party member of parliament who is expected to become the opposition's spokesman on foreign affairs. "A prime minister cannot say that -- maybe an opposition leader can say that."

Even Putin got into the act last week by admonishing the twit administration about the “imperfect” way he was elected…

6. It's much more careful to ignore the wishes of 90% of your people
and send your troops off to die in an illegal war cooked up by a coked-up frat boy and his imperialistic gang of thugs.

If that's the story, I'll take the inexperienced Mr Z.

9. Well there you go
Bush, Powell, et al wanted Kerry to name which foriegn leaders would prefer Kerry over Bush and now Zapatero just gave them one name to start things off. And it's so much better coming from Zapatero rather than from Kerry. Leaves no doubts about the validity.

12. Hasta la vista, arbusto!
:hi:

I guess Shrub will no longer find the need to polish up on his Spanish. Certainly, he won't be invited to Madrid in the near future. :-)

I'm so glad Bu$h is persona non grata in most of Europe. Now, we have to show the rest of Amerika the truth about their "leader".

No more fasci$m: vote for Kerry!

:kick:

15. Poppy is still golf buddies with the king
so the Bushistas and their pals will still get to go hunting, too. During the 2000 recount, Poppy was hunting in Spain with Baker and the others till Baker had to fly to Florida in a hurry.

10. I think this actually hurts our cause
Mainstream America tends to be xenophobic and they certainly don't want foreign leaders telling them who and who not to vote for.

14. What a moment. Most splendid.
I've been so unhappy these past three years. Watching our awesome country go from bad to worse, to down the toilet. Being a helpless prisoner, along with the rest of the world, to the Nightmare on Pennsylvania Street.

What a surprise, then, that such a beautiful statement should come from such an unlikely place, Spain. What a gutsy guy.

Thank you, Sr. Zapatero, for making these past three years less horrid. To use their own words: "such an un-careful thing to say".

16. Spain's PM-elect Zapatero
is very outspoken. I think he should not have said it so undiplomatically. There are other ways of saying it, but then Bush has set a bad example, and now he's getting it back. He's being treated the way he treated others.
