Howard Mintz, San Jose Mercury NewsThe Senate Judiciary Committee today voted to confirm Santa Clara County Superior Court Judge Lucy Koh to a federal judgeship in San Jose.
Koh drew no opposition in a voice vote from the committee members, who sent the nomination to the full Senate for consideration. There is no timetable on that vote, but political wrangling in Congress has delayed many of the Obama administration's judicial nominations.
If confirmed, Koh, 42, would be the first Korean-American woman on the nation's federal bench and possibly the first Asian-American federal judge in the Bay Area if San Francisco U.S. Magistrate Judge Edward Chen's nomination continues to be held up in the Senate.
Koh, who would fill veteran U.S. District Judge Ronald Whyte's seat, has been a Superior Court judge since 2008, when she was appointed by Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger. She is a former federal prosecutor and law firm partner who received a "qualified" rating from the American Bar Association.
