The Iraqi Governing Council has asked U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan to send back a U.N. team to help put together a government that will take over from the U.S.-led coalition on June 30, a council spokesman said.
The letter sent Wednesday by current council president Mohammed Bahr al-Ulloum, a Shiite cleric, also requested technical assistance ahead of a general election due by the end of January 2005, council spokesman Hamid al-Kafaai told The Associated Press.
"The Governing Council has asked that the United Nations offers advice to Iraq in the field of elections and the formation of a transitional government," al-Kafaai said.
U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan, asked Wednesday afternoon whether he had received the letter, said: "I haven't gotten it."
