Vandals deface former Nazi concentration camp

Vandals have defaced a former Nazi concentration camp with anti-Jewish and anti-Turkish graffiti, Austrian authorities said Friday.

The spray-painted graffiti extends about 10 meters (33 feet) along the wall of the former Mauthausen concentration camp, which is now a memorial site, according to police in Upper Austria province.

The vandalism was discovered Friday morning and is being investigated, police said.

Local politician Josef Ackerl, a Social Democrat, said the incident showed the urgent need to monitor the extreme right better.

18. It's not whether their views are extreme, but whether they are prepared to harm others in the cause

of these views.

There are and have been some far-left terrorist groups: e.g. the Angry Brigade in the UK a generation ago, and the Red Army Faction in Germany. But I think that violence and the targeting of specific individuals and groups of people is much commoner (a) on the Far Right; or (b) among ultra-nationalist and ultra-religious groups of all sorts; or (c| among single-issue groups that cannot be classified into left vs right (e.g. some on the furthest extremes of the Animal Rights movement).

In Austria and some other parts of Europe, neo-Nazis are the biggest danger.
