Medical marijuana gaining support in N.C.
Source: WRAL.Com

RALEIGH, N.C. — State lawmakers could vote on a bill legalizing marijuana for medical purposes this spring.

Rep. Nick Mackey, D-Mecklenburg, sponsored the bill and held a Thursday night rally at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte to support medical marijuana.
House Bill 1380 passed an initial vote last year and is now in a health committee.

Joe Cullen said he suffers from a debilitating, muscular disease that has left him in a wheelchair and in constant pain. He's on painkillers, but he said smoking marijuana is the only thing that truly works to relieve his pain.

Color me surprised. I honestly thought we'd get marriage equality here before MM. Check out the comments. Normally WRAL is a cesspool for righties who don't know there's a FR. :P

1. Oh Boy - Get Ready
Colorado passed MM 10 years ago - for 9 years I wondered where one might buy some of this MM - well.....now there are 22 MM dispensaries in my zip and it's the only/fastest growing business.

Of course the city council people are now freaking out - meetings and tweeking the laws to reign in the boom.

3. K & R...Well good...at least someone will be in less pain....
Now if they would only legalize Hemp (you know..the stuff you cant get high on) for our farmers to grow...we could save a few farmers and open a few factories and create some jobs.

12. Very true
NC has a lot of empty factories that used to make textiles.
Jeans, unders, teeshirts, sheets, towels used to be all made within about 40 miles from where I now live.

13. even the kind for fibre, food and fuel
would be helpful. I have some hemp pants that I bought about 7 or 8 years ago and they are still in GREAT shape and I wear them almost all summers. Also, it makes great paint base.

18. yes...and a bio-degradable paint thinner...that wont harm the planet...
I understand the first model-T Ford body was made out of hemp fiber-board...and was made to run on hemp for fuel too.
I have also held some material made from hemp that was soft as silk..nice stuff.
Not only that..but a mighty fine cooking oil as well as animal feed can be made with this plant.
So many products could be made with it..and so many jobs created that I feel it should be a crime to try to keep it illegal ..especially at times like this when we NEED those products and jobs.

17. 2nd..also, the effects of marinol apparently make people MORE high
and there's no cannabanoids (sp) in it, which are beneficial to other patients. There's just (a lot) of synthetic THC.

11. The pill is called dronibinol or marinol
Long term hiv and cancer survivor.
The pills do not really work well but I take them since I have no alternative. It slows down the spasms from the chemo like meds i take 2x ever day.
The side effects from the meds give me either cramps, loss of appetite, nausea or severe diarrhoea, some times its even more fun than that with all hitting at the same time. I have seizure, migraines and pain too. MJ is really an all around help. Pain meds make me ill, sleepy, and grouchy(as if I needed anything to make me even more crabby), pain meds also interfere with the seizure med which i can cut back on when I have mj.

Anothe consideration is that I could grow my own in the back yard for whatever it costs for seeds.
Dronibinol costs 600$ to 1200$ a MONTH. The 600 is the minimum dose which is all my dr will give me, with the admonishment that I don't want to chance getting a buzz to 1200$.

7. LOL @ remark re WRAL. Too true!
Considering the Wake County public schools debacle, this is welcome news. It's hard to peg this state; so progressive in many ways, yet so backward in others.

19. A local tv news channel had a poll about this a couple of days ago
80% favored legalizing marijuana for medical purposes. I was pleasantly surprised.
