White House feels blast impact

<snip>WASHINGTON—Gen. Richard Myers had just wrapped up 45 minutes of upbeat news on the U.S.-led Iraqi mission, punctuating his remarks with a reminder to foreign reporters that none of their home countries can hide from the war on terrorism.

In the time it took to whisk him from the 8th floor National Press Building briefing room to a waiting vehicle, every television monitor in the building was carrying live coverage of yesterday's massive car bombing in the centre of Baghdad, which killed at least 27.

The juxtaposition was particularly striking, coming as it does during a week when the White House is desperately trying to convince Americans — and the world — of the progress it has made as the anniversary of the Iraq invasion approaches.

Just as resolutely, and more dramatically, insurgents in Iraq are trying to convince the world otherwise.

1. Trying to instill fear into everyone again...
"a reminder to foreign reporters that none of their home countries can hide from the war on terrorism."

Is that a threat?

3. It's much like Bush* and Cheney doing their damnedest to

talk down the economy during the 2000 campaign. It drove me up the wall that men who wanted to run the country would do something like that, would talk the market down.

Once they were ensconced in power, of course, and the economy did start falling apart, they blamed it on Clinton, ignoring their culpability in undermining confidence in the markets and ignoring the effects of their own idiotic behavior toward other nations (basically plastering a "Screw You!" sticker on their foreheads when they talked to leaders of other nations.)

Now they're trying to talk down national security around the world, with a nasty "They'll get YOU, too, and THEN you'll be sorry you wouldn't join our Iraqi crusade" attitude.

5. The Pentagon has lowered the death count
to 17 as of this morning. I wonder if this is for real or if the Iraqis had simply taken the bodies to the morgue before they finished the count because Bremer had told the hospitals to stop counting the dead last year.

9. But The World Is Safer!! The Republicans said so, it must be true!
the stuff coming out of Baghdad must be disinformation. There weren't really any explosions. It's all a plot by those terroristic Liberals to undermine the war on terror. They hate Bush so much that they will resort to any kind of lie, even manufacturing explosions and deaths... </sarcasm>

10. A Life Is A Life

This sorry administration puts so little value on a Iraqi life.
They only value the life of Americans - and I'm not so sure about which ones of us they value.
It is a shame.

I'm joining the Peace March for the first time.
