Obama vows to reduce nuclear weapons

US President Barack Obama has pledged to cut the number and role of nuclear weapons in America's national security strategy.

Mr Obama, marking the 40th anniversary of the nuclear non-proliferation treaty, said a policy review would go "beyond outdated Cold War thinking".

In a statement, he said he would also continue to seek ratification of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty.

Mr Obama will host a nuclear security summit in Washington next month.

Russia has been spending Billions in R&D on new ICBM's, strategic bombers, and ballistic missile submarines. So what does that tell you? It tells you that they still see a large nuclear stockpile as a integral part of their military for the foreseeble future. They have even publicly said that at times. So how far are the cuts going to go with russia? My guess is not much farther, eventually russia will say "no more cuts" or even start developing new weapons.

The thing i'm worried about is that the US will start giving up more than its getting return with these negotiations. Their are rumors that russia tried to push the U.S. to get rid of some of its conventional capabilities like some of its aircraft carriers, in order to get deeper cuts from them.

A nuclear free world is a great ambition to have, but we can't go flying in blindly. We must approach it slowly and cautiosly.

23. DU is used to kill tanks and hard targets. I handled it in the NG, in Bosnia. Know its MSDS

have read the WHO documentation on its impact to human health. I have worked with it in my current materials engineering job and both the depleted and non depleted form. So yeah, I am familiar with it.

In bosnia it was used to kill hard targets, there were few to no hard targets in falluja. For dismounts HE rounds are preferred in crew served weapons. A quick peek at liveleak gun camera footage will show people being killed with HE munition in the 20mm and 25mm variety.

any fact about DU or its use not covered in the WHO findings. DU is a toxic heavy metal, dont eat it. I have first hand experience with the metal and have handled the munition and worked with it in my current job.

I assume you are referring to the BBC article about the west bank since no link has been provided. This sums it up.

21. Nope and Oak Ridge does not generate power. You are wrong, and have no idea

what you are talking about. Reactor fuel for modern civilian reactors is uranium based and not concentrated (enriched) to the point to be useful in weapons.

The only reactors that use plutonium are military and they tend to be on things like ballistic missile submarines. The reactors used to make plutonium are not run by duke energy.

28. They have not released the NPR. I expect cuts in stockpiled weapons

in large numbers. I also expect money to be provided to keep modern weapons online and viable. I would not expect a new class or expansion of roles. The NPR is due for release any day now.
