At least five civilians, four of them children, were killed in a powerful roadside explosion in Kapisa province in north-eastern Afghanistan Thursday, media reports said quoting local officials.

According to Taqab district governor Abdul Hakim Akhundzada, the deaths were caused by a landmine blast blamed on Taliban militants.

The children aged 12-15 were playing near a dirt track when the explosion occurred killing them and also an Afghan national.

A NATO statement said three children were also injured in the blast.
