The car bomb in the Iraqi capital coming hard on the heels of the death of more than 200 people in attacks on four Madrid communter trains last week has thrust the war on terrorism and the invasion back into the spotlight for the two candidates for the US presidency.
Bush has a series of high profile Iraq-linked events planned for the anniversary of the March 20 invasion.
After a trip on Thursday to speak to an estimated 20,000 troops and their families at a Kentucky military base, Bush will Friday received ambassadors from the 30 countries in the international US-led coalition now in Iraq.
He will also visit soldiers recovering in a top US military hospital in Washington. On Saturday's anniversary, Iraq will feature strongly in what is being billed as Bush's first electoral rally.
