2 US soldiers killed in Iraq (mortar) attack
Two American soldiers have been killed and six wounded in a mortar attack north of Baghdad, the US military says.

The attack occurred at a logistics base in Balad, about 70 km (45 miles) north of the Iraqi capital.

The deaths bring to 391 the number of US soldiers killed in action since the Iraq war began almost a year ago.

The US military blames attacks against US-led troops and civilians on supporters of ousted Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein and Muslim militants.

1. The deaths bring to 391 the number of US soldiers killed in action
Why does this number not match all the rest of the media who place the number at over five hundred?

2. Because they've begun massaging the numbers again,
parsing their words to bring it as low as they can.

7. Yeah accidents, like flipping your humvee...
happens all the time, not just when the guys with RPGs are firing them at you.

Has nothing to do with combat, see?

5. Not a dupe: Mortar kills 1 US marine, wounds 3
Violence-torn Iraq sees no respite

...

A US marine has been killed and three others wounded in a mortar attack in western Iraq, a senior coalition military official said Thursday.

The marine was killed when three mortar rounds were fired on US troops at 6:55 pm (1555) on Wednesday near the Iraqi-Syrian border at Qusayba, the official said.

The latest casualty was the first marine to be killed on duty since some 25,000 US marines were dispatched to Iraq in 2004, to relieve American grounds forces returning to the United States.
