Clinton: Israel Must Prove Commitment To Peace

Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton says Israel must prove it is committed to the Mideast peace process with actions, but brushed aside suggestions that U.S.-Israeli relations are in crisis.

Clinton said Tuesday that U.S. and Israeli officials are in intense talks "over steps that we think would demonstrate the requisite commitment to the process." She said the Obama administration was awaiting a response from Israel to suggestions on how to repair damage caused by last week's Israeli announcement of new Jewish housing in east Jerusalem.

why not look into the dozens of UN sanctions that Israel has ignored over the years (or that the US vetoed so that Israel wouldn't be shamed).

At the same time that Israel was committing the 'horrible' act of announcing new housing, Palestine dedicated a new school and Square to Dalal Mughrabi - a suicide bomber that killed 38 people including 13 children.

No one is free from bloody hands in this conflict, but to say it all falls on the Israelis is simply ignorant. The Arab world has been using the Palestinians as fodder in their 60 year quest to destroy Israel.

Clinton restated U.S. "dismay and disappointment" with the announcement but disputed the perception of the relationship in crisis.

"I don't buy that," she said. "I have been around a long time, not that long, but a long time. We have an absolute commitment to Israel's security. We have a close, unshakable bond between the United States and Israel and between the American and Israeli people who share common values and a commitment to a democratic future for the world."

The US secretary of state, Hillary Clinton, todaydemonstrated a new-found steeliness towards Israel by making it clear she was expecting it to back down in the row between the two countries and offer concessions needed for a resumption of Middle East peace talks.

As rock-throwing Palestinians clashed with Israeli forces in Jerusalem in protests dubbed "a day of rage", Clinton sent a double-edged message to Israel.

She softened the tone of remarks coming from the Obama administration over the last few days by talking about the deep bonds between the two countries. But she combined this by firmly placing the onus on Israel to make concessions needed to get the Palestinians back into talks.

Clinton told reporters at the state department that the Israeli prime minister, Binyamin Netanyahu, had to take action to show he was serious about a peace process. She said: "We are engaged in very active consultations with the Israelis over steps that we think would demonstrate the requisite commitment to the process. It's been a very important effort on their part as well as ours. We know how hard this is. This is a very difficult, complex matter. But the Obama administration is committed to a two-state solution."
