Kildee OKs abortion provision, will support health bill

Washington -- Rep. Dale Kildee said today he is "convinced" Senate abortion language would ensure no federal money is spent on the procedure, clearing the way for him to support the overall health care bill. "We must not lose sight of what is at stake here -- the lives of 31 million American children, adults, and seniors -- who don't have health insurance," the lawmaker said in a statement.
"There is nothing more pro-life than protecting the lives of 31 million Americans. Voting for this bill in no way diminishes my pro-life voting record or undermines my beliefs. I am a staunch pro-life member of Congress -- both for the born and the unborn."
Last November, Kildee, D-Flint, voted in support of a more expansive funding ban authored by Rep. Bart Stupak, D-Menominee, which passed 240-194.
His announcement that he can accept the Senate abortion language will be seen as a blow to Stupak, who has spearheaded an effort to prevent people who are federally subsidized from being able to buy private health care plans that cover abortion.
