Relax visa norms for Indian professionals: India to US
Source: Economic Times India

19 Mar 2010, 0725 hrs IST, PTI

WASHINGTON: India has strongly taken up the difficulties faced by its companies and American MNCs in getting a US visa for Indian professionals with the Obama Administration and asked to make sure that the issue does not hinder the fast growing trade and commerce ties between the two countries.

Concluding his three-day trip to Washington, Commerce and Industry Minister, Anand Sharma, said that he effectively raised the visa issue with top Obama Administration officials, in particular those being given to Indian professionals; who are in a very high demand in the US.

"I have the issue of visas, particularly for the professionals. Given the fact that a large number of Indian entities are engaged here generating employment and creating wealth," Sharma said.

Noting that there has been significant agreements between Indian and the US cooperate entities, he said recently Bharati group has given $2.5 billion contract to the IBM.

1. Screw that in this economic climate.
"Generating employment and creating wealth?"

Obviously do NOT generate employment...but there is that money issue...which I'm sure the figures are much, much higher now than in 2007:

Indians abroad sent $27 bn home in 2007

2. The news isn't always bad

TCS yesterday hosted a grand opening of the new facility, which
includes 200,000 square feet of office space and can accommodate up to
1,000 TCS associates, most of who will be locally hired from the region and
its universities. The facility will serve as the primary software
development and delivery center for North American customers.

A neighborhood is blossoming on the edge of the CSU campus. International students, many from India, are creating a student enclave in a lonely part of downtown and filling a nighttime void with bright young voices.

Some see the downtown desis -- as young South Asians call themselves -- as the leading edge of a new wave of urbanites. CSU is spending millions on dormitories it hopes will speed its conversion from a commuter school to a big league, residential campus. It's a vision that could transform the east side of downtown with new people, restaurants and energy.

Ramana Ari, an aspiring mechanical engineer from India, wonders what everyone has been waiting for.

"It's excellent," he said of his East 12th Street neighborhood. "We've got the Indian food nearby. We've got campus minutes away. We've got good transportation to anywhere. I can honestly say we live in one of the best environments in Cleveland."

3. Not sure about the other professions,
but their Engineers (EE & ME) are among the least competent i've ever seen. They are good at accomplishing singular, directed tasks but can't reason or innovate their way out of a walk-in closet.

10. It's cultural.
The eastern world are very hard workers, but are too focused (fanatically) on order.
Innovation is a trait of the west.

4. Hawkeye-X to India - Fuck you.
You're stealing jobs out of the United States because our corporate masters are too fucking cheap to maintain talent in the U.S., and now you want to take jobs away from us?

Forget it. You have jobs in India, I suggest you pursue it.

5. After HCR passes we will need thousands of MDs. The only source is foreign and their inflow will
harm health care in their own nation.

11. "Our"?
You're conflating H-1Bs with naturalized CITIZENS who worked hard to start businesses in America. There's a ton of Indian doctors here as well. Are they taking "our" jobs, too?

16. Yes they are taking our jobs
We should be offering stipends to doctors to teach on the side and better loans for medical students. We could be training more medical folks right here in the good old USofA.

Hows about India opens up and let's us send as many students as we want to their Universities at the same cost they charge Indians?

8. In my experience
In my experience, working with both Indian engineers & Indian programmers...some are good and some are bad. Just like any group of people.

But there are thousands and thousands of America engineers/IT folks who have been unemployed for a long time. Hire them first!

19. They work more cheaply than Americans, for one.
Bottom line, at least according to companies and their CEOs. I compare contract workers such as Indians to modern-day slave labor.

And, the excuse of "We can't find qualified American workers for these jobs" got old, oh, around 1996 or so.

This chart is in Rupees.

$1 US = 45.3 Rupees, or 1 Rupee = $0.02

17. I agree
We should be welcoming the best and the brightest with open arms. I'd rather they ply their trades in America than India or China. Importing the cream of the crop helps us maintain our competitive advantage.
