U.S. may expand use of its prison in Afghanistan

The White House is considering whether to detain international terrorism suspects at a U.S. military base in Afghanistan, senior U.S. officials said, an option that would lead to another prison with the same purpose as Guantanamo Bay, which it has promised to close.

The idea, which would require approval by President Obama, already has drawn resistance from within the government. Army Gen. Stanley A. McCrystal, the top commander of U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan, and other senior officials strongly oppose it, fearing that expansion of the U.S. detention facility at Bagram air base could make the job of stabilizing the country even tougher.

1. Oh come on. This is so disingenuous. Bagram is already in operation and expansion is underway.

As if there's no torture going on. It's torture listening to all this prevaricating crap about how torture isn't already constant at both Bagram and black sites around the world.

However, Clara Gutteridge, an investigator of secret prisons and renditions from the human rights organisation, Reprieve, said Bagram is seen as "Guantanamo's lesser-known evil twin".

"All this talk about transparency, and the US government still won't release a simple list of names of prisoners who are in Bagram," she told Al Jazeera.

"None of them have had access to a lawyer ... and that just seems very unfair.

5. two things we do quickly !!!!

One is engage others in war and we are great at building more prisons ! While many suffer from lack of health care and others from lack of employment.Would it not be nice if we built affordable housing and provided the best health care plan to those who cannot afford what these HMO are charging for membership ! Do we really want to be known as the land of prisons and war ?

7. The US is focusing on what we do best, dealing death, destruction and injustice.

They're growth industries.

ALL the refugees of economic, environmental, and other disasters weren't just going to kill themselves, don'tcha know.

I am cynical sometimes, but I am not hiding behind it. We better all be willing to cause some discomfort to the comfortable. I believe in ripple effects. We each need to do something even if it doesn't seem especially effective. Just consider how something little like the kindness of strangers makes you and others feel. Anything that reinforces We're In This Together is good.

The powers that be wouldn't be so concerned about disrupting organizing if they didn't fear its effectiveness. SHOW UP!
