Tammy Faye(Bakker) diagnosed with inoperable lung cancer
Edited on Thu Mar-18-04 11:27 PM by rmpalmer
http://www.cnn.com/2004/US/03/18/tammy.faye.cancer/index.html

Tammy Faye Messner, the former wife of televangelist Jim Bakker, announced Thursday night she has inoperable lung cancer.

Messner, a guest on CNN's "Larry King Live," said she was told of the diagnosis two weeks ago.

"They can't take it out because it's too near the heart and there are too many blood vessels that are near the cancer," Messner said.

She said she will begin chemotherapy treatment soon.

1. For anyone who hasn't yet seen it...
go rent the documentary "The Eyes of Tammy Faye". You'll see her in an entirely different light.

I hope she survives this.

4. I've always liked Tammy Faye, and that documentary was so well done
I think she's nutty as a fruitcake but her heart of gold shines through, as well as her sense of humor and zest for life. I wish her all the best, I'm sure that if anyone can beat a terminal disease, Tammy Faye will be the one.

6. I think this one is the "Big One" for Tammy.
Edited on Thu Mar-18-04 11:53 PM by liberalnurse
You can hear it in her voice....that tone of surrender. Not in a negative way, not in a "I give up" but this one is pretty big and she knows it too.

29. Kind of lost track of her after all the scandals but I read the transcript
of an interview she and her ex, Jim Bakker, did on Larry King Live. Seems both of them turned their lives around (apparently anyway). Last I heard Bakker was working for some charitable organizations in a very low-profile manner.

2. I saw her on Larry King
She'd had cancer some time ago, but refused chemotherapy because she didn't want to lose her hair.

She said tonight that her first reaction when told she had inoperable lung cancer was, "Oh, I just had my hair streaked…"

Hope she beats it, but it might be too late now.

3. I certainly wish for her to beat her medical problems.
She is still a fraud who stole money from poor and gullible people. Lots of money.

9. My mother...
died of lung cancer that had invaded her heart. Chemo will prolong
the process but it won't cure or give remission. I can only wish Tammy Faye a decent journey and a peaceful transition. (not a fan - not a judge).

No sarcasm here, really. Here's hoping that Tammy Faye gets one of those miracles she's been discussing for years.

11. i like tammy faye
Can't help myself. I think she's a hoot.

Did you catch her story, on the clip from "The Surreal Life," about how in "ancient civilizations," murderers were required to carry the body of the person they killed on their backs. She said she's finally forgiven (the evil) Jerry Falwell, and gotten that dead man off her back. (She's always accused Falwell of stealing PTL-land from Jim and her).

I wish we all could get that particular dead man off our backs.

I hope Tammy gets through this.

I concur with the assessment of "The Eyes of Tammy Faye." It's a great movie, and you may treat her more charitably after seeing it. She has lousy taste in husbands, that's for sure! Two jailbirds in a row!

13. I'd have to see the x-rays before I cared what she said.
Those televangelists and most people who benefit from religious belief like priests think nothing of lying and making crap up.

The first thing I thought when I read that story was ahh big 'miracle' coming up, look now the x-rays show nothing. And no x-rays showing it in the first place.

After people like this lie about things their whole life. For example god told me to tell you to send me money. Or we need money for a million bibles for Iraq! Oh darn they got burned we need money for a million new bibles for the poor Iraqis. (who we made poor lol)

After they lie so often you just stop listening or caring what they say. They prey(pray;>?) on peoples worst fears. Like people who are dying or have someone close to them who is dying. They get you to buy supposed holy water for 50$ dollars to 'cure' them. To guide Jesus' miracle.

Its lowlifey and scummy. And now that I think about it I really have no sympathy. At least when shes dead she won't be able to prey on people's fears and superstitions. The one thing I do wish though is that after these religious people's lights turn out forever I wish they could see the other side, the eternal nothingness that is death and know that their whole life they prayed and bowed down for nothing. And know that the whole time they looked like fools to educated people.

27. I agree with your accessment of TFB and those of that ilk.
Of all the Abrahamic religions, Christianity seems to have the worst problem with abusers of the faith and the faithful.

12. I really like Tammy feel really bad for her...
I saw her on the Surreal Life and she seems so genuine, was on the show with Ron Jeremy the porn star and she was not judge-mental at all. Apparently Tammy has wrote a few books and has a loyal gay following, for being a fundie she is very tolerant of other peoples lifestyles. I hope she can fight this and survive, both my mother and aunt died from cancer and it a tough struggle. :-(

19. I love Tammy Faye
I wish her the best. She's come a long way since the PTL. She always comes across as nice lady. She's also been very outspoken for gay people.

I love ya, Tammy!

28. I wonder if some fundie TV evangelist will make hay of this
Some vulture like Fallwell will probably say she got lung cancer because she became less judgmental. Then again, maybe I come across as a vulture for wondering if some vulture will say this. It gets confusing.

I hope she gets well, just because she is human and so am I. Now if it was Rumsfeld or Cheney, I might not be able to make that claim.

16. this may seem cold...
....but I have not a clue in the world why this is being reported on national news. I'm sorry she's having trouble. Am I missing something? Did these people contribute to society in such a way that we should be interested in them any more than the neighbor down the street? Now there will be endless television appearances and endless milking of public sympathy.
