Stupak: Randy Neugebauer Should Should Apologize on House Floor for "Baby Killer" Remark

Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mich.) called on Texas Republican Rep. Randy Neugebauer to apologize on the House floor for calling out "baby killer" during Stupak's speech on Sunday night in support of the health care bill which passed.

"Randy did call and apologize. He said it wasn't directed towards me personally. Well, if that's the case then it must have been directed to the rest of the members of the House. I would hope Randy would just clear it up and take to the House of the Floor and say, 'look I didn't mean to offend anyone. If I did, I apologize,' Stupak said on "Washington Unplugged," CBSNews.com's daily politics Web show.

"That's what he should do and that's what I would expect him to do," he told moderator John Dickerson.

The Michigan Democrat admitted he has received a "mixed reaction" from his constituents after negotiating an 11th hour deal with White House officials in order to limit federal funding for abortions in the health care legislations, paving the way for his "yes" vote.

"It's sort of been a mixed reaction. It's always sort-of a toss-up in my district," he said.

2. Saying, 'look I didn't mean to offend anyone.

If I did, I apologize,' as Stupak suggests, would not be an apology. I can't think of any way it could be intended to do anything but offend, unless there are other reasons to call someone a baby killer that I don't know about.

5. Why has the non-apology apology become the accepted norm?

"IF I offended anyone..." Um, yeah, the REASON you are having to apologize (but not REALLY apologize) is because you were offensive.

Why not just say what they mean: "F you, I don't feel the least bit sorry for what I said but if it'll get you off my back, here's an insincere bundle of meaningless words." ?

And it makes me crazy. It is the same as when a kid/teenager says, "sooorry" in a tone of voice that really means stfu.

Leaders, role models, people we should expect more of, have taken to using the same sort of tactic to justify their bad behavior (rather than hanging their head in shame, as they should).

9. First, he should admit he was talking to Stupak, not a piece of paper and NEXTapologize on the

floor of the House for making the statement and for lying about it.

Stupak's suggest apology is just another lie. How does he claim he did not mean to offend Stupak by calling him a babykiller? How is it not offensive to the entire House, and to all Americans for a legislator to behave that way?
