NASA projects 2010 will (likely) be the hottest year

The headline to this post may surprise many Washingtonians who are still thawing out from the cold and historically snowy winter. However, not only does a new NASA draft analysis predict that 2010 will likely set a new global temperature record, but it also projects that it is "virtually certain" that a new 12-month running mean global temperature record will occur sometime this year.

Wait a second, you may say. That doesn't make sense, given the relentless cold thus far in 2010 (at least until the past two weeks), not only in Washington, but also throughout Europe and parts of Asia.

So, where is this forecast coming from?

First, as I detailed last week, the winter of 2009-2010 wasn't actually very cold from a global perspective. In fact, according to NOAA, the past winter (Dec.-Feb.) was the fifth warmest on record on a global basis. . .

4. Up here where we are supposed to have

and expect hard winters, this past season has been the mildest in recent history, and self's personal memory.

Yesterday was the earliest official "Ice-out" on Auburn Lake in the central part of the the State. This has been one of the earliest and shortest Maple Syrup seasons as well.

Maybe the Mid Atlantic States "stole" our winter? :shrug: One does not need a :degree: to realize something is amiss when Kentucky has lower low and lower high temps, during the month of February, than the top of New England.

The weather has been so warm, I'm afraid of what the heat will be in the summer.

6. Relentless cold, my ass.

Here in Atlantic Canada, there were two weeks of relatively moderate cold the last week of January and the first week of February, but the last three weeks of February saw almost no snow, and temperatures right around freezing. The entirety of March has been significantly warmer than usual (the harbour is almost always frozen over until at least early April).

It has been Spring and sunny here since well before the calendar end of Winter, when it's usually the opposite: Winter straight through to nearly the end of April. When "relentless cold" is the norm, a Winter as mild as this one has been is as unusual as it is welcome.

7. We are having some crazy weather here in Dallas.

Last week it got up to 76 then two days later it snowed and actually stuck, now we are back up to the mid 70s. Yeah thats normal. Also we got almost a foot of snow a month ago, in Texas, a foot of snow....in Texas and Im not saying panhandle just south of Colorado Texas, I'm talking Dallas hot as balls Texas.

What we're feeling now in 2010 reflects our activities only up to 1960 --!!

As I've mentioned before, we also don't acknowledge the effects of atomic weapons

on Global Warming and/or Ozone hole --

Obviously, the effects will continue to speed up and worsen --

Needless to say,the entire Industrial Revolution has impacted the planet --

20. While we had a lot of snow here in SE PA..

the winter wasn't all that cold. Dec and Jan around average. Feb below, but without really brutal winter temps. March has been like April/May. Last below average March in Philly was in 2005. It's a shame that many people are forgetting about global warming, because it's a major concern. Now that the health bill is law, attention can go into getting cap and trade passed.
