GOP Lawmaker Darrell Issa Poised to Call for Special Prosecutor to Investigate White House

Rep. Darrell Issa, the top Republican on the House Oversight committee, told CBS News Wednesday that he will call for a special prosecutor to investigate the White House if it does not address Rep. Joe Sestak's claim that he was offered a federal job in exchange for dropping out of the Pennsylvania Senate primary.

"If the public doesn't receive a satisfactory answer, the next step would be to call for a special prosecutor, which is well within the statute," Issa told Hotsheet.

The California Republican has been pushing for the White House to provide details of conversations between Sestak and administration officials in the wake of Sestak's comment during a radio interview last month that he was offered a high-ranking administration job in exchange for dropping his primary challenge against Sen. Arlen Specter.

Asked if that job was secretary of the Navy, Sestak declined to comment. His press secretary told CBS News that the lawmaker stands by his original statement that he was offered the job in exchange for an administration post. Sestak did not drop out of the race.

In the 1970s, Issa and his brother were twice charged with auto theft, once for a Maserati sports car in 1972 and for a Mercedes Benz sedan in 1979, along with being accused of stealing a car during his military service, although he denies these charges. He has also been convicted for possession of an unregistered gun. <4>

Issa made his fortune through his company, Directed Electronics Incorporated, that is most famous for its flagship product, the "Viper" car alarm. It bears one notable siren that is a recording of Issa's voice, "please step away from the car."<5> As of 2004, Directed Electronics was North America's largest aftermarket automotive electronics manufacturer. Issa divested all personal interest in Directed Electronics after being elected to public office, but is the richest member of the House and the second richest in all of the 111th Congress.<6>

I also remember he was behind the Grey Davis recall. He wanted to run for governor, but dropped out in a strangely tearful press announcement.

Gray Davis was a far better governor than the asshole in the Governor's Mansion right now. Gray Davis never fucked the state of California as much as some of the other governors in the state, like Pete Wilson, Ronald Reagan or George Deukmejian.

The main thing that was blamed on Gray Davis was the energy crisis of the early 2000s, which we ALL know by now were actually perpetrated by Enron and other enery powerbrokers. They also blamed him for trying to be vigilant when there was a chance of terrorists plotting to blow up, among other things, the Golden Gate Bridge.

And now, Schwarzenegger has done to California what Bush did to the rest of the country--fucked it over so bad that it will take years to get out from under. A large part of my family lives in SoCal, and I keep telling them to get the fuck out, but they're not planning on moving anytime soon--more's the pity, knowing that my mom is dependent on the in-home care program, which she would not be able to get outside of the state.

I just have a super sensitivity about some of the politicians in CA. It's there that I got more involved politically, when Clinton was in office, and all the troglodytes ganged up on him. I had David Dreier as my rep, and gawd, I couldn't stand the man! Darrell Issa was, and remains, the man who sold California to the highest bidder, and the run for governor was a freak show.

So please forgive my tone. CA was my home for 15 years, and while I had some horrible experiences there, I did have some good memories as well.

Over the last 30+ years, I have watched, in horror, as neocon politicians and their policies have reduced my once great state in to a hollowed out, barely functioning wreck..
